Commentary on the movements

  1. [Chorale]: Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. A gentle 12/8 chorus in "an extremely dense, highly expressive texture"1 instrumentally, and a typical imitative choral structure below the chorale as cantus firmus.
  2. Aria (Alto): Ich will auch mit gebrochnen Augen. Flute and Oboe d'amore again work in imitation, but also in homophony (thirds) over a "tranquil" continuo part. The highly expressive material of this movement, richly ornamented, leads to conjecture that "and expressive interpretation of this movement lay particularly close to the composer's heart."1
  3. Recitativo (Bass): O Wunder, daß ein Herz. Secco recitative alternating with chorale.
  4. Aria Duetto (Tenor, Bass): Ein unbegreiflich Licht erfüllt. Two violins in playful imitation play a concertante counterpoint to this duet.
  5. Recitativo (Alto): O unerschöpfter Schatz der Güte. Secco recitative.
  6. Choral: Er ist das Heil und selig Licht. A plain chorale setting.
