Commentary on the movements

  1. (Coro): "Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit" for choral and instrumental tutti. This movement is an interesting anomaly; instead of Bach's typical ritornello chorale form, this movement adopts a motet form; each line of the chorale is treated in imitation and then as a sort of cantus firmus. Additionally, every subject is followed by its inversion, and then its augmentation given by the horns and oboes, creating a rich five-voice texture.
  2. Aria: "Unsre Stärke heißt zu schwach" for soprano, corno da caccia, strings, and continuo. This aria "acquires particular sonic charm from the trumpet...added to the string orchestra." (1). In comparison to the first movement, this is a relatively conventional movement in bright colours and clear textures.
  3. Recitativo: "Ja, hätt es Gott nur zugegeben" for tenor and continuo. Recitativo secco; the continuo is furiously active in this movement, with some very fast passages under certain movements.
  4. Aria: "Gott, bei deinem starken Schützen" for bass, oboes, and continuo. This movement is much more solemn, but the oboe and bass writing make this a rather exciting aria.
  5. Chorale: "Gott Lob und Dank, der nicht zugab" for choral and instrumental tutti colle parti. A standard 4-part chorale, with consistent eighth-note motion in the inner voices.
