Extra Information Canada's national anthem. An English translation appeared only in 1906. A distinct English text was proposed in 1908 by Robert Stanley Weir. This text, which was slightly altered in 1927, 1980, and 2018, is the one used today in English Canada.

Musicologist Ross Duffin has suggested https://doi.org/10.1093/musqtl/gdaa004 that Lavalée constructed the melody for O Canada by adapting material by Mozart (March of the Priests, measures 1-8), Liszt (Festklänge, measures 17-20), Wagner (Wach auf, es nahet gen den Tag, measures 9-16), and Matthias Keller (The American Hymn, measures 21-28).
