Please read the score submission guidelines before reading this page.

Submission of a score is basically:

  1. Create a composer page for the composer if none exists
  2. Create a work page for the work if none exists
  3. Add the file to the work page

Creating a new composer page

  1. Go to the main composer page, and click on "Add Composer".
  2. The form should be fairly self-explanatory. All fields are optional except Last Name, First Name (usually, unless for some reason the composer doesn't have one) and Time Period. If the composer bridges two time periods, choose the period that the composer spent most of his life in. If you think the composer should be credited to both periods equally, please select one of the periods, and leave a note in the Moderator Request section of the forums.

Creating a new work page

  1. Go to the page of the composer of the work, and click on "add a piece to this composer page".
  2. Below is a breakdown of what is expected from each field in the form (some of the more self-explanatory fields have been left out):
    1. Work Title: A mandatory field. Please make sure the title used is unique in the composer's output (ex. putting Piano Sonata in G major for a Beethoven piano sonata is not a good idea because three of Beethoven's piano sonatas are in G major). Also, avoid being too wordy (Piano Sonata No.10 in G major is too wordy; put instead just Piano Sonata No.10), the "wordy" titles should go to the field below (Alternative Work Title).
    2. Alternative Work Title: This is the normal title of the work that appears on the actual page. If this field is left blank, the title given in "Work Title" will be used on the page.
    3. Alternative Title: This is the alternative title that will be shown on the work page (ex. Pathétique for Beethoven's 8th piano sonata). (I'm perfectly aware that the name of this field and the last is really confusing... if you can think of a better name, please leave a note in the forums or contact me via the IMSLP staff contact list)
    4. Opus/Catalogue Number: Most composers use opus numbers, but a few also have catalogue numbers (Mozart, Bach, etc.). If both are present, please include both (if you don't know one, look it up -- it shouldn't be hard to find). Also, be sure to indicate the catalogue name in addition to the number (for example, Op.18 instead of just 18). If there is no opus/catalogue number for this piece, then leave this field blank.
    5. Name of Composer: The default for this field should be used. Do not change unless you know what you are doing.
    6. Genre: This field is mandatory. If you believe a new genre should be added to the existing list, please contact us using the IMSLP staff contact list. Also, if you are not sure of the genre, you can put it in the "other" genre, and leave a note in the Moderator Request section of the forums.
    7. Librettist and Language: Optional fields used only for vocal works.
    8. Piece Style: A mandatory field. Usually, the piece should be put into the same time period as the composer.
    9. Orchestration: Shortened format for orchestra is permitted (3/3/3/2 4/2/3/1 with strings, or similar).
    10. Misc. Comments: Optional field. The text will be formatted wiki style, so any formatting used in normal wiki edits can be used here as well.
  3. If there are any fields besides the three mandatory ones (page title, genre, and piece style) which you don't know, leave it blank.

Adding a File to a Work Page

This is a two part process:

Part I: Uploading a File

  1. Click on the "upload file" link beneath the search box on the left side from any wiki page.
  2. While the format for the file name is not really strict, it should contain both the composer's name and the work title.
  3. The rest should be fairly self explanatory. Please remember (or write down) the destination filename, because you will need it in part 2. Note that '#' and other forbidden characters will be automatically changed to '-' in the destination filename. File names are case sensitive. Also make sure there are no double spaces (two spaces in a row) in the file name, as it can (and/or will) get messy.
  4. The only permitted file types are PDF, DJVU, MUS, SIB and ZIP. The current file size limit is 100MB; there really shouldn't be a reason to have a file larger than that, but if you do, please contact me at IMSLP staff contact list and we'll figure something out.

Part II: Creating a File Entry

  1. Go to the work page of that work, and click on "Add a file to this work page".
  2. Please add as much information as you can. This helps prevent confusion and redundant files to be added. Below is a breakdown of the fields:
    1. File Name: Mandatory and pretty self explanatory. Enter the file name of the file you uploaded from the first part (i.e. the destination filename).
    2. Work Page: Use the default. Do not change unless you know what you are doing.
    3. File Description: A brief description of the file uploaded (ex. Complete score, Complete score of first movement, Complete score of all movements, Piano reduction, Orchestral parts, etc.). If the file is a typesetted file, then typesetted score is frequently added to this field. This field is mandatory.
    4. Editor: The person who edited the score. This is not always known, usually the editor is printed on top of the first page (e.g. edited by... or in french revue par... or éditée par.... This field can concern the original editor, and in case of a typesetted score, the typesetter.
    5. File/Image Type: This choice is mandatory. Typesets and retypesets are files which are produced using methods other than scanning a published score (i.e. file created electronically from Finale, Sibelius, or any other music notation software). A "manuscript scan" is a scan of handwritten music.
    6. Scanner/Typesetter: This is the place to mention the source of the score.
      1. For Scans: This field should include the name of the scanner, or the website where the file was obtained.
      2. For Typesets: This field is mandatory for typesets (but not for scans). Please put the name of the typesetter here, or the site where the file was obtained.
    7. Uploader: This is the name that shows up on the page; if left blank the nick you are logged in as will be used. In both cases the user link itself will always point to the talk page of the nick you're logged in as.
    8. Publisher Information: You can find publisher information usually on the bottom of the first page of the score. The format for this field is as follows: "<Place>, <Publisher>, No. <Publisher's publication number>, <Date>. Plate <Plate number>." You may leave out information that you do not have. Also note that, if the publisher is unknown, the place of publication should also be left blank (i.e. "<Publisher>, <Date>" is fine, but "<Place>, <Date>" is not, since it is confusing).
    9. Copyright: Self explanatory. The "Personal" option refers to any license that meets the CC-SA or similar criteria. A copy of the license must be attached.
    10. Misc notes: In this field, notes about the quality of the score are frequently added. E.g. low resolution, grayscale, 300 dpi. Generally, high quality is reserved for files that are printable (>300dpi), and Low quality is for files that are not easily readable on screen (<75 dpi).

Appendix: How to Batch Upload/Submit

How to Batch Upload

To batch upload files (up to 20), use the "Multi-File Uploader" special page.

How to Batch Submit

To batch submit files (up to 15) to a work page, use the "Add multiple files to this work page" link on the work page itself. However, because this function is a recent addition, many pages do not have this link. You can add this link by adding the following code:

after the "[[Special:AddFile/{{PAGENAME}}|Add a file to this work page]]" line. An alternative to manually editing the page is to use the Special:Transform page, but be warned that while it works on about 90% of pages it will break a small percentage of pages badly (in which case you'll have to manually fix it).

Note that all fields will be the same for all files, which means you will probably have to manually edit the page after submission.
