Ludolf Nielsens "Fira Klaverstykker" are dedicated to his later wife Ellen Paul-Petersen. He originally wrote 5 movements, but one "Allegretto con sentimento" exists just in the manuscript. The 2nd movement "La doleur" was first titled Valse lento, but Nielsen changed it for the published version. All four pieces were orchestrated by the composer and played as a "Suite", and were first performend on 29 October 1908 at the Tivoli with Ludolf Nielsen as conductor.
