In other words, basso continuo? Figured? It's also possible "basso" was just in some contexts a synonym for "cello". If notes the double bass' then range are used, then that instrument is ruled out, for instance; if double-stopping or notes below the bassoon's 1768 range are used, that instrument is ruled out- etc. ... (well, probably. Beethoven's famous passage in the Coriolan overture does not mean that he did not actually mean double basses when he explicitly wrote double basses, despite going below their range in an octave-with-cellos passage...)
