Though the title page specifies the harpsichord, the composer actually calls for a chordal instrument and a viola da gamba. There is a record (in the Mercure Galant of August 1707) of all six sonatas having been performed before Louis XIV, to whom the composer dedicated the work. Two members of the Marchand family were the performers.
