An episodic piece in Romantic style: In the 1st section, 4 environments of Earth are presented with different themes. In 2nd section, the progress of civilization is represented by a chorale, but in the 3rd this collides and merges with the theme for encroaching desert. The 4th section presents a more positive outlook with reprise of the forest theme. There is a multicultural coda.
