History

Founded by the composer and pianist Johann (Jean) André (1741-1799) in 1775 or 1776, though he had self-published his singspiel Der Töpfer a few years before in the wake of its successful production in Frankfurt. In spite of André's transient career as a performer and composer, the publishing concern was obliged to remain in the small city of Offenbach due to Hummel's exclusive privilege in Berlin. However, André was still able to establish good relations with Pleyel in Paris and with Joseph Haydn in Austria, which resulted in a significant expansion of the publishing firm. By the time (1799) the firm passed into the hands of his son Johann Anton André (1775-1842), there were more than 1000 titles in the catalog.

The firm's expansion was assured thanks to Johann Anton's acquisition of Mozart's musical estate from his widow Constanze during a trip to Vienna in 1799, which also saw the acquisition of the rights for a new lithographic printing method invented by Senefelder and Gleissner. The next two decades saw the release of numerous Mozart titles for the first time, plus the opening of branches in Frankfurt and Paris. The Frankfurt and Offenbach divisions were merged under Johann Anton's son (Johann August André) and grandsons (Karl and Adolf André), who managed to avert financial difficulty by issuing inexpensive editions of the classics along with new choral and educational editions. The firm continued to operate in Offenbach despite its near total destruction in World War II (1944), reopening in about 1948.
