Commentary on the movements
- Sinfonia [Chorus]: Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir. A sinfonia for oboe and strings introduces the heartfelt laments of the chorus in this hushed opening movement.
- [Bass Solo + Chorale] (Soprano, Bass): So du willst, Herr, Sünde zurechnen. The transition is seamless between the opening movement and this one, an arioso-style movement with obbligato oboe and the soprano singing the chorale tune as a cantus firmus.
- Chorus: Ich harre des Herrn, meine Seele harret. The soloists interrupt a chorale, transitioning into a fugue.
- [Tenor Solo + Chorale] (Alto, Tenor): Meine Seele wartet auf den Herrn von einer Morgenwache. The longest movement, this continuo-aria-style movement again features a male voice with alto cantus firmus this time.
- [Chorus]: Israel hoffe auf den Herrn; denn bei dem Herrn. Instead of the standard closing chorale, a homophonic movement recalling the opening movement closes the cantata.
