- Recorded in 1986 by John Denman and Paula Fan (and earlier on a Crystal LP).
- Though Grove's article on Donald Francis Tovey lists his Clarinet Sonata op.16 as being written in 1906, the Musical Times reviewed a clarinet sonata by Donald Tovey in January 1904, from a concert that was given on 17 December 1903 (vol.45, no.731, p.43). Unless Tovey wrote two clarinet sonatas, which is doubtful, Grove's 1906 dating of the op.16 sonata is incorrect.
- The cover page does not mention a violin substitute, and neither does Grove Music, which would indicate the violin alternative is not Tovey's. Also, although in the right concert key, with the same movement names, the parts are not totally exact equivalents. However, Grove Music does list a separate entry for a violin sonata written the year after the clarinet sonata. It is possible that the violin sonata (which Grove does not assign an opus number to), is modelled on the clarinet sonata, but is not exactly the same. Without looking at a piano part belonging to the violin sonata, it is not possible to tell whether the violin version should be on a separate page.
