History

Founded by Johann Georg Cotta (1631-1692) in 1659 in Tübingen after taking over the university bookseller. Passed the business to his son, also Johann Georg after his death in 1692, which then passed to the latter's eldest son (Also Johann Georg) upon his death in 1712. Christoph Friedrich Cotta (1730-1807), the son of Johann Georg III did set up a publisher to the court of Stuttgart, but the business languished.
