Version History

  • Composed 1898 as incidental music to Gallet's play. Orchestral force consists of two wind bands, a string orchestra and additional instruments (band instrumentation by Charles Eustace?).
  • Later reduced by Saint-Saëns for an ordinary orchestra (likley for a performance in November 1898 at Théâtre de l'Odéon)
  • Revised 1911 as a 'drame lyrique' (opera)
  • Prologue ("Béziers, noble cité...") proceeded the first performance on 28 August 1898 to celebrate the "Fêtes de Beziers" and not included in later versions.
