Misc. Comments

This is a one-movement work, with Liszt's commanding ghost hovering in the background. Initially, the Latin quotation (from Livy) on the title page placed it under the pall of hope, an oxymoron which this piece attempts to mirror with alternating bursts of energy and despair, using the two recurring initial measures as its nutshell or motif. For the first time manuscript samples of the work in various stages of development are shown.
Prior to a revised version, a fresh performance of the work has been submitted in Jan. 2015, and again the following year. Contrary to the third sonata, revisions of the score are expected to be minimal, whereas the fourth sonata has had to endure a major overhaul.
