Section Listing

  1. Coro: Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild. A festive and lively opening chorus whose beginning is reminiscent of the second trio from BWV 1046. The horns and agile oboes lend the chorus a character quite apart from most of Bach's choruses. G Major
  2. Aria (Alto): Gott ist unser Sonn und Schild. A gentle aria for alto and oboe/flute in a lilting 6/8. D Major
  3. Choral: Nun danket alle Gott. Bach here reuses his opening horn call in a setting of Nun danket alle Gott. G Major
  4. Recitativo (Bass): Gottlob! Wir wissen den rechten Weg zur Seligkeit. Secco recitative. The sudden change of mood might indicate that this cantata has a split before this into a second part. e minor-b minor
  5. Aria (Soprano, Bass): Gott, ach Gott, verlaß die Deinen nimmermehr. Beginning immediately with the voices declaming the figure which will shape the entire movement, this aria is 'pretty' with many "approachable"1 elements. b minor
  6. Choral: Erhalt uns in der Wahrheit. A plain chorale setting. G Major
