Misc. Comments
- The first appearance of the verse God Save the King was in a 1744 collection entitled Harmonia Anglicana, There is no direct evidence that Carey was the composer, though it's not impossible that the music first appeared in an obscure ballad of his. The tune is also sung to words by Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895), first issued in an 1832 collection by Lowell Mason entitled The Choir with the title America. American composer Charles Ives' Variations on "America" uses this melody as a basis.
- From 1871 to 1918 Heil dir im Siegerkranz was the unofficial national anthem of the German Empire.
- Heil dir im Siegerkranz has the melody of God save the Queen, the national anthem of the United Kingdom.
Lyrics
1. Heil dir im Siegerkranz,
Herrscher des Vaterlands!
Heil, Kaiser, dir!
/: Fühl' in des Thrones Glanz
Die hohe Wonne ganz,
Liebling des Volks zu sein!
Heil, Kaiser, dir! :/
2. Nicht Roß, nicht Reißige
Sichern die steile Höh',
Wo Fürsten steh'n:
/: Liebe des Vaterlands,
Liebe des freien Manns
Gründen den Herrscherthron
Wie Fels im Meer. :/
3. Heilige Flamme, glüh',
Glüh' und erlösche nie
Für's Vaterland!
/: Wir alle stehen dann
Mutig für einen Mann
Kämpfen und bluten gern
Für Thron und Reich! :/
4. Handel und Wissenschaft
Heben mit Mut und Kraft
Ihr Haupt empor!
/: Krieger- und Heldentat
Finden ihr Lorbeerblatt
Treu aufgehoben dort,
An deinem Thron! :/
5. Dauernder stets zu blüh'n
Weh' unsre Flagge kühn
Auf hoher See!
/: Ha, wie so stolz und hehr
Wirft über Land und Meer
Weithin der deutsche Aar
Flammenden Blick. :/
6. Sei, Kaiser Wilhelm, hier
Lang' deines Volkes Zier,
Der Menschheit Stolz!
/: Fühl' in des Thrones Glanz,
Die hohe Wonne ganz,
Liebling des Volks zu sein!
Heil, Kaiser, dir! :/
