The Swedish State Ombudsman, Gustav Schlyter, approached Nielsen in 1918 to prompt his interest in composing music to a poem by Sophus Michaëlis. The text was finished in August 1921, and on 31 October 1921 Nielsen sent the fair copy of the score to Schlyter.
