IMSLP:Tagging/July 2015 Tagathon/Archive

This page is for everyone involved with the July 2015 tagging marathon, aimed at clearing the backlog of untagged works.

The list of all untagged works can be found here: Category:Untagged pages. Please feel free to tackle them in any order you choose.

Each of us should aim to tag at least 10 works per day (but if you have to miss a day then it's OK to do 20 the following day to make up for it). If you are willing and able to do more than 10 a day, then you're very welcome to do so!

Just a reminder that the list of tags can be found at IMSLP:Tagging, and that the order of instruments in the tags must be the same as in that list.

Please post any questions or comments below, starting each new topic with a H2 header (e.g. ==New Subject==).

Contents

Number of Untagged Works

At 2000 GMT on Tuesday 30th June, the number of untagged works stood at 1,749.

Sacrae symphoniae (Gabrieli, Giovanni)

  • Too many tags, I hope I got all of these right for this piece! -Sallen112
It looks OK. One of the worst ones!
Ha, ha, I've been staring at that one for while now, thinking I would never have time to sift through it. . . so thanks! (Becky)

Jamaican Rumba (Benjamin, Arthur)

  • Is it spirituals or just pieces? -Sallen112
It's "rumbas" !

Napolitana (Facoli, Marco)

  • Oxford dictionary considers Napolitanas their own song style. Should I create a new catagory on the tagging list or use some other classification?
No, you should continue to tag them as "songs". The language code "nap" makes them easy for people to identify P.davydov 13:21, 1 July 2015 (EDT)

Ein Frolich wesenth (Isaac, Heinrich)

  • The only piece here is an arrangement so should we tag the original song version and the arrangement even though the original is not here?
Tag it as the original, that is part of the tagging project. Only in the exception for workpages that host arrangements that would be from another workpage with the original instrumentation would you use the arrangement tags. -Sallen112
So in this case the piece uploaded is for 3 viols, but the original is 3 voices, so I should tag the workpage as 3 voices and not put any tags about the 3 viols arrangement that is present? That seems like it would prevent people from finding the work...
The arrangement tags are automatically created so for example above the files in the arrangement it says "for 3 viols"? It has created this at the bottom in the category section already. What we are tagging is the original tags for non-arrangements! -Sallen112
Makes sense - thanks! - icactus
Just a point that might not be relevant for this particular one, but for lots of others -- if you can confirm the original instrumentation from a reliable source, then put that in. Otherwise, use "und", and make notes in the Comments section. The undetermined tag means it will still come up on a list of things to check from time to time, and whatever else needs correcting can be corrected when the original is found, for example genres can be incorrect if the arrangement ended up with a different title. It's the "und" that means someone will keep checking it. Becky

Day One

Well done everybody, over 200 works tagged in the first 24 hours. It's actually a few more than that, because there were several new uploads during the day. If we keep up this pace then we'll be done in just over a week :-) In practice of course it's not that straightforward because there are some tough nuts to crack, but it's a good start. P.davydov 18:33, 1 July 2015 (EDT)

Sallen here, yeah thanks everyone too! I know I have been bugging everyone alot but better to keep everyone notified than not! I absolutely appreciate everyone willingness now to help out its great! I hope Day 2 and beyond will be as productive as today!

Also just a reminder for everyone, we are going by "GMT" time for determining our start and finish times. You will have to convert your times wherever you live. Davydov your internet is going down tomorrow until Saturday correct? I can write Day 2 and 3 logs if you want? -Sallen112
Haha, don't worry, no-one has to adjust their clocks to GMT. The target is simply to tag at least 10 works within your normal day. I started slightly early on Tuesday because I'll be offline for around 48 hours from today, so I wanted to get my quota done in advance. I should be back again late on Saturday, but in the meantime keep up the good work everybody. The goal of zero untagged works is on the horizon :-) P.davydov 02:50, 2 July 2015 (EDT)

Arpeggios (Prume, François)

I remember leaving this one partly because it is an arrangement, but partly because we have a tag for specific scale studies, but do we want to expand the definition of "scales" to include scale or arpeggio studies, or do we want an arpeggio tag? Davydov, what do you think? Becky

I'd be tempted to go with the subtitle: "Caprice pour le violon avec accompagnement de quintuor ou de piano : op. 12", and tag it "caprices"

Canto I (Schoonenbeek, Kees)

  • This piece has a non-standard chamber music instrumentation and when I put in the instruments none of the tags auto-populate... - icactus
Davydov will take care of this, he has to go into the Mediawiki software pages and add in the new chamber tag, which will overwrite the "Unknown Tag", this happens when there is a new tag that is not part of that Mediawiki is the reason the instrumentation is showing up as "Unknown". Don't try to mess with this software, only Davydov knows how to update this. I haven't ever messed with this either and I don't want to even try. -Sallen112

Koto I (Merino Martínez, Aitor)

This work needs a new instrument tag added for the koto. - icactus

Done. The tag is "koto" — P.davydov 04:41, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Two

Thanks everyone for doing alot of hard work today! Another 100 pieces gone from the list, now up to around 300 workpages tagged! If we sustain this progress through next week and the week after, we will be finished with this list! As Davydov has said already yesterday, keep up the good work! Now one concern I am thinking about coming up soon as the list gets smaller and smaller, we may have to start working on the pages that are most questionable and come back to those over days and tag easy ones in the meantime so we can figure these out! Once again thanks everyone! -Sallen112

Procissão de Ramos II (Lobo de Mesquita, Emerico)

This piece is accompaniment for a procession so is it then ok to use the cortege tag? - icactus

I'd say it's the correct tag --Feduol 16:27, 3 July 2015 (EDT)

Gebed voor de Predicatie (Wassenaer, Unico Wilhelm)

A chorale prelude? It's a chorale melody (O Gott, Du unser Vater bist) and the title says "Prayer before the Sermon". It's not as complex as most chorale preludes, and maybe not for organ? Has the chorale melody on top and a bass line with figures on the bottom. Might be for the organist to accompany the congregation singing the chorale. How should such a piece be tagged? - TW

Maybe Sacred Chorales or Sacred Songs? -Sallen112
We need to go by the title, so I would use "pieces ; org" and then put the comments (i.e. uses the chorale melody "O Gott, Du unser Vater bist", possibly also that it is not as complex as most chorale preludes) in that section. If it is specifically for before the sermon, then possibly not for accompanying the congregation. -Becky
We have many 'chorales' arranged for organ, so I'd be happy with that tag — P.davydov 12:24, 4 July 2015 (EDT)

Adam Jarzębski

The pieces we have of this composer come from "Canzoni é Concerti", which are instrumental works based on vocal works by other composers (see the wikipedia on Jarzębski). "Soprano" only refers to the range of the instrument. Which category should they be in? The Canzonas can be identified by the typical opening rhythm (minim, crotchet, crotchet) but I'm not sure about the others. - TW

There are several debates about considering musical ranges in the Renaissance period. I consider that the soprano (superius) part is more likely to simply means the top part of a piece than a specific tessitura in G2 clef. I tag these works as open instrumentation (3open, 4open, etc.). Indeed, 95% of Canzonas are Half note.png , but it isn't what we find on Jarzębski's works. In other hand, we need to be as close as possible from the original title (Concerti e canzoni a 2, 3, 4 strumenti), so I'd suggest both concertos and canzonas tags. --Feduol 19:29, 3 July 2015 (EDT)
It would be best if individual pieces from a collection were not tagged with every genre in the collection title, so if you can work out which is which, it would be better. I can't find a full content listing (sometimes they give genres for the individual titles), and we don't have the full collection, but what I can find (in Grove) is that the fact that they are based on existing works does not matter -- Grove says "All the two-part pieces are transcriptions of polyphonic vocal works by other composers, among them Giovanni Gabrieli, Lassus, Merulo and Palestrina, but Jarzębski treated the original pieces in such an individual and creative manner that his transcriptions are in fact new compositions, instrumental in nature. He took over only the broad structural outlines and the thematic material of the originals".
Some are subtitled "Concerto a 3", so I've tagged them as concertos. The others are for the moment concertos and canzonas, but I have contacted the editor, Joëlle to see if she can find any more information in the original publication.
It's important to note that at that time the musical terms, especially those for instrumental music, wasn't standardised. Canzone, concerto, sinfonia, sonata, etc, were terms until the 17th century widely used most of the times indistinctly. --Feduol 20:40, 4 July 2015 (EDT)
Yes, it doesn't feel correct calling these pieces Concerti, because this is not what the term means to us now. Wikipedia says "In the early 17th century, almost all music with voices and basso continuo was called a concerto, though this use of the term is considerably different from the more modern meaning (a solo instrument or instruments accompanied by an orchestra)". It's a shame we can't make this distinction.
I think we need to have a clear policy about terms that have different meanings through the epochs , when we can "translate" and tag thinking in a modern meaning or use the original terminology. I've been always tagging according to original terms. We have the example of the tag lieder in Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte just according to the composer's title. --Feduol 11:10, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
In the case of canzonas, there is such a policy -- "canzoni" vs "canzonas" are for different types of works. As for concerto, it is against international library protocols to ignore what is in the titles. Although we have added some terms to the MLA list, we haven't ever ignored their protocols completely. -Becky

Day Three

  • Good work once again today everyone! Right now as of this post, we were a little short on the amount of tags tagged today, we should all try aim for 100 in total from everyone together minimum possible, I had to remind a couple of you about if you missed a day or didn't tag ahead of time the day before, you have to make it up today with 10 more added onto your daily allowance that day. I know as the pages we encounter start to have more missing info on the General info that it will slow down, skip that workpage for now and move onto something else that is clearer to tag so you keep the 10 daily possible! I am able to check everyone's contributions so I am watching. Right now for myself personally, I am getting my 10 done in around 13:00-16:00 GMT time everyday so far. Keep it up guys! -Sallen112

Modern Catagory

  • Is it possible for anyone to tackle the rest of the modern era pieces above? As of this posting, we have 8 left in the catagory! -Sallen112
I've done four of them, but the remaining ones are large collections, and I don't have time today to download and get all the instrumentations . . . Becky

Mixed Consort/Broken Consort

  • There doesn't seem to be any tag for the renaissance instrument grouping of the "English Consort", "Mixed Consort" or "Broken Consort" even though they are pretty standardized name groupings like string quartet would imply. Maybe there is a tag for the instrument group I just didn't find... any help?
  • Also it seems we need an instrument tag for the Bandora unless it is classified some other way. - icactus
  • Broken consort will go under open instrumentation, which is explained on the tagging page.
What I've been reading indicates the concept of "broken consort" referred to a rather specific instrumentation group as opposed to just open instrumentation. Is that not the case or are there other reasons for using open instrumentation tags?
Related question - "consort song" is a distict genre of english song on wikipedia but we don't have a category for it. Do we just go with "song" and is that actually a good idea to be doing? - icactus
  • Icactus, which works specify a "broken consort", "English consort" or "mixed consort" in their instrumentation? — P.davydov 16:04, 4 July 2015 (EDT)
I haven't seen anything actually specify that in a manuscript or score. Rather what little I had read made it sound like it was an implied ensemble with somewhat flexibility about a couple instruments hence the use of a tag like "broken consort" even if its not specific. This work is one example: Nutmegs_and_Ginger_(Anonymous). - icactus
OK, let's avoid those terms, as according to Grove there's a degree of ambiguity about them, and it doesn't correspond to the score of Nutmegs_and_Ginger_(Anonymous) that's online. This has been re-tagged for "rec 2lute vn 2viol" (there's a second lute rather than a cittern, and the bandura should be tagged as a viol) — P.davydov 09:57, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
Ok - thanks for the info. --Icactus 11:19, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
Also, this work specifies itself as a "Consort Song." My_minde_to_me_(Anonymous) Wikipedia refers to a consort song as a hold-out against the madrigal so do we want a new genre tag, or do I just call it a song? - icactus
According to Grove, the term consort song relates to the instrumentation, so "songs" is the correct genre tag — P.davydov 09:57, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
Well that settles it. Wish I still had access to Grove - sounds like it has a lot of answers. --Icactus 11:19, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

Les Courses de Tempé, RCT 33 (Rameau, Jean-Philippe)

  • Can anyone figure out the instrumentation for this work possibly, would be curious to know! -Sallen112
Unlikely we will ever know -- Grove describes it as largely lost, and indeed, what we have is mostly libretto. By the way, I've changed the tag to pastorales and divertissements, because that is what is in the title, and also Grove does not classify it as a ballet, but as incidental music, so I've added that to the tag as well. -Becky

Präludium und Fuge D-Dur für Orgel (Bach, Johann Lorenz)

  • Can anyone figure out how to remove this from the Untagged list above? The link is in italics but is redirected to a different workpage name in English and the page is already tagged. -Sallen112
Done. Someone had uploaded a file to the page after it had been redirected, which confused the system! — P.davydov 05:20, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Four

  • Thanks again everyone the list is getting smaller and smaller daily, that is what we like to see! Keep it up everyone, we will be done with the list in the near future! -Sallen112

Day Five

  • Edging down towards the 1,000 mark. That will be a real milestone! — P.davydov 15:56, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
  • Just a reminder that you can sign and date your comments by typing four tildes, like this ~~~~
Thanks! I was wondering how your were getting the time like that! Sallen112 16:03, 5 July 2015 (EDT)
In my timezone, we went from around 1250 today to under 1100 works left today and still counting! Amazing!!

Day Six

  • WE DID IT!! We have officially passed the 1000 workpages left to tag mark! Great job everyone! Don't give up now everyone, we still have to reach zero one of these days! Sallen112 20:13, 6 July 2015 (EDT)
More than 700 works tagged in less than a week! Congratulations to all! --Feduol 20:51, 6 July 2015 (EDT)
Yes indeed! — P.davydov 03:54, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

3 Villanelle a 3 voci (Fiorino, Gasparo)

  • Can anyone check to see if the instrumental tags are right for this workpage?
The "3vv" isn't necessary, but otherwise yes. The work type should normally be given in the English plural, so it's "villanelles" — P.davydov 03:53, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Use of "religious works" as a tag in itself

This page -- Exaudi Domine (Isaac, Heinrich) -- was tagged with "religious works" as a tag on its own. That tag is not in our tagging list, and in fact, while all of the religious genre tags fall under it, it doesn't really get used on its own, because it is usually pretty easy to come up with something from the list that will be more specific. Grove Music lists this under "Cyclic settings of the proper of the mass", but they were published in the "Choralis Constantinus". I will re-tag it, but my question is: is the "Proper" of the mass tagged as a mass, or should this be "sacred choruses"? Steltz 12:25, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

"religious works" is not a valid tag. "masses" is fine for extracts from the mass which don't have their own category — P.davydov 13:15, 7 July 2015 (EDT)
  • Steltz, you might want to look at KW314's tags in his contribution history, this user has used this already alot in this tagging marathon.
I tried to, but his name shows up in red, so although I can get to his talk page, I don't know how to get to his contributions if there is no "front" page. Steltz 12:57, 8 July 2015 (EDT)
Found it! But there is a lot here that needs to be double checked!!! Steltz 13:07, 8 July 2015 (EDT)
You looked under "Recent Changes" under "New User Contributions" right? You then type in the username exactly "KW314" into "IP address or Username". Then click "Search". This should come up with every edit since the beginning under the user's name, which I think the user started on July 1st with Tagging. Sallen112 13:47, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Seven

  • Sorry this is a little late. I noticed some lack of workpages tagged today, please guys I know we just passed the 1000 mark (less than 1000 actually) but that doesn't mean now you guys we can just slow down! We probably have tagged way more than -40 workpages like above (we started I think between yesterday and today at 980-85) because of all the new workpages that have appeared today. Let please try to keep this up to 100 workpages tagged per day, OK guys? I know it is a lot to keep up, but if there are days like today where alot of new workpages popped up on the site, we still have to tag the backlog too! It is already an achievement we have reached this far but the goal is still reaching zero workpages left for the first time! Sallen112 22:03, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Misere (Anonymous)

  • Can anyone see if the genre is right for this work? I think treble is the "sop" tag correct?
Looks OK to me — P.davydov 01:34, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Eight

  • OK guys, I hate to sound like I am a broken record here, but I am a little bit concerned now that two days in a row now, I suggested that we as a group get through 100 pages of tagging per day. Today once again, we have only gone down from 940 to around 900, which is not good enough with the requirements for this marathon that we have in place. Going through the Recent Changes, I noticed alot of volunteers uploading and creating new workpages, which is great for more contributions to IMSLP but we told everyone here everyday to focuse mainly on the backlog. I have done my tagging in the morning since the beginning of the marathon this month. If you guys want to upload new pieces and create new workpages, you also will have to add on tagging 10 workpages MINIMUM (NOT the ones you guys have created for yourselves) from the backlog. Some of you are doing fine like we have asked. If after tomorrow, I still see the number above from now WAY less than 100, I will be contacting each member and going through the recent changes to see what is going on and why you are not making this more of a priority over whatever else you are doing on the site. Please guys I don't want to be negative about all of this, but this marathon IS only just this month, no other month in the future for right now! Sallen112 19:37, 8 July 2015 (EDT)
  • We have just reached the 800s thank you! Sallen112 23:49, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

New Tags

Just to mention that "koto" and "tanp", for the traditional Japanese koto and Indian tanpura respectively, have just been added to our list of instruments — P.davydov 04:43, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

Inserts in other people's operas

Davydov, what is the current policy on inserts written for other people's operas. Le Cinesi (Broschi, Carlo) is a currently under Broschi's name, but the opera is credited to Nicola Conforto, and Broschi only wrote one or maybe two single piece as inserts for it. At the very least the full opera name should go under Conforto, but what do we put Broschi's contributions under? Thanks, Steltz 13:45, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

If the inserts exist as separate scores (published separately from the rest of the opera), then I'd put them on a separate workpage in the later composer's category, with cross-references between it and the page for the main opera. If it's effectively a reworking of the original, with multiple additions or alterations, then I'd only put it under the page for the original opera, adding an attribution note (using Template:Attrib) at the top, and a link to the second composer's category at the bottom of the page, so it will appear in their list of works. Hope that makes sense — P.davydov 16:41, 9 July 2015 (EDT)
It does. The main thing for this one is this -- if it stays on its own page, surely the page should be the name of the aria, not the name of the full opera? Steltz 12:43, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
Yes, it should be — P.davydov 13:25, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
Next question: there is a recit and aria: "Ogni di più molesto dunque Tirsi ti fai" and "Non sperar non lusingarti". Will it be the aria name only? Both seems like it will be too long. Steltz 14:41, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
Could they be split onto separate pages? — P.davydov 18:04, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
"I put it under Ogni di più molesto dunque Tirsi ti fai", because in looking at many of the other smallish works we have at IMSLP, they were all under the name of the opening recit, not the aria (I kind of expected it to be the other way around, but it wasn't . . .) Steltz 13:36, 11 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Nine

  • Keep up the Good Work Guys! Sallen112 20:59, 9 July 2015 (EDT)
  • Ok also I apologize for yesterday's log entry, I am too impatience right now and I realize that I get to aggressive with things like this when it isn't really that big of a deal, the list is going down everyday and that is all that matters right now. As long as we keep reducing the list in anyway shape or form, we are all happy then! And right now we will definitely finish before the end of the month, no doubt about that! Sallen112 21:08, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

Heart of Oak (Boyce, William)

  • The Genre Tags are somewhat confusing for this pieces (originally composed as an opera, note in comment section about it being a pantomime, and is the official Royal March of the British Navy) so not sure if the tags are even correct for this piece. Sallen112 01:52, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
Hmm, tricky. It was written as a song for David Garrick's pantomime (play) "Harlequin's Invasion", which also had contributions from other composers. The Library of Congress catalogues the songs under the names of their individual composers, so I suppose we can continue to do the same (instead of having one page for "Harlequin's Invasion (Various)". Grove and other sources refer to it as a 'song', so I'll add this and remove the other tags — P.davydov 13:44, 10 July 2015 (EDT)

Ire gbogbo (Akinfenwa, Segun)

  • This piece will need a new language tag: Yoruba. Sallen112 09:59, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
The tag will be "yo" — P.davydov 13:45, 10 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Ten

  • Sorry for this being late again. Keep that number shrinking! Sallen112 22:31, 10 July 2015 (EDT)

Nun bitten den Heiligen Geist (Staden, Johann)

  • Not sure if this is for 3 voices or 4 voices Sallen112 11:15, 11 July 2015 (EDT)
It could be a mistake on CPDL. As we have what looks to be a well-sourced score for 3 voices, I'd stick with that — P.davydov 12:11, 11 July 2015 (EDT)

Hungarian Language Tag

It might not be important, but is there a reason why the Hungarian language tag is "hu", when in its own language is "Magyar". So why not "ma"?

Because we use the ISO standard 2-letter codesP.davydov 15:32, 11 July 2015 (EDT)
Sorry, I didn't realise that. - TW.

Prolific Arrangers

108 remaining untagged pages are arrangements of Hoeger and we also have 49 from Michrond and 37 from Folop. Some of these will be nearly impossible to work out (I hit a dead end with Michrond's arrangements a few moths ago). Is there a way these editors could help? Surely they know where these pieces come from? Maybe also for the future we could request that they give original instrumentation for their uploads? - TW.

We have asked :-) But they were all transferred to IMSLP from the WIMA project, and in most cases the arrangers could not recall where they had found the originals. I think we should use "und" for the instrumentation in such cases, and just put "pieces" for the work genre if it can't otherwise be ascertained (even where the original could have been a vocal work) — P.davydov 17:52, 11 July 2015 (EDT)
Today and tomorrow I'll take care of Folop viol arrangements. His editions aren't truly arrangements since he just take away the text from vocal pieces, keeping the music and the number of voices untouched. The genres are easily to find through Grove or CPDL. --Feduol 19:56, 11 July 2015 (EDT)
I have in the past done a lot of work with these. Please put comments that will help the next person who wants to keep looking, e.g. where you looked, comments from Grove Music that indicate a direction to look in, possible sources, etc. Just so we don't keep reinventing the wheel . . . :-) Steltz 11:23, 12 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Eleven

Posts from the first week have now been archived to reduce the length of this page, but can still be read from the filing cabinet link at the top right.

Today's total may not seem to have moved much, but that's only because 60 new pages have been created in the last 24 hours. Let's keep chipping away at it! :-) — P.davydov 18:01, 11 July 2015 (EDT)

Medieval Catagory

  • We have 15 pages left, can we try to finish this category possibly? Sallen112 19:42, 11 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Twelve

  • The number is slowly shrinking, it could be a lot more down if more of the volunteers were on to help! Please lets keep going over 650 left to do! Sallen112 19:42, 12 July 2015 (EDT)

Vespers, Op.37 (Cazzati, Maurizio)

Does anyone object to this being tagged "vespers" and "psalms"? Vespers usually include psalm texts, which I think can also be performed independently. Instrumentation = SATB solo and choir, 2 violins, continuo. - TW

Just "vespers" will be fine — 13:27, 13 July 2015 (EDT)

Selva di varia ricreatione (Vecchi, Orazio)

  • Too many tags, although not as many as the Sacrae Symphoniae of Gabrieli! Can someone check? Sallen112 20:42, 13 July 2015 (EDT)
Looks fine :-) — P.davydov 17:17, 14 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Thirteen

  • Keep going everyone, we are now starting to get to the real challenging works as we approach 500 workpages left to tag! Sallen112 20:42, 13 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Fourteen

  • Down to 550 works now. Remember, if we all manage to tag 10 works a day, within a week we'll have finished! — P.davydov 17:22, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
At least for me, it's being more and more difficult to tag 10 pages daily. A lot of research is necessary for some pages and of course is better to focus on quality than quantity. --Feduol 19:05, 14 July 2015 (EDT)
I'd have to agree now, I have given up on trying to tell everyone to tag 10 per day, seems most of the guys have dropped off. But I have kept up with it since the beginning of the month! Sallen112 19:11, 14 July 2015 (EDT)

  • Much of what is left is collections and will need much more research. These should probably be marked for cleanup so all the links and things can be finished, regardless of what kind of generic or specific tags need to to in. Steltz 12:09, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
Well lets try to go as far as possible before we can't do 10 workpages a day anymore because the workpages will take too much time to look up and research. Sallen112 12:42, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
For instance, we have the Victoria's Opera Omnia in the untagged pages category. To tag everything would demand a big effort, although works of the same collection are in individual pages already. Maybe could we have a generic "collections" tag to that kind of pages? --Feduol 20:15, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
For that page, since we have the sections laid out in the movements/sections field, why not just take the genres that are listed in Latin and just use those as the tags for that piece? You might be able to use the "Opera" tag too.... Sallen112 20:21, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
Sallen, that would be a good starting point, indeed, but the 8th volume should be yet view in terms of the musical genres. Also, it's necessary to see the number of voices of each work. I wonder how useful a huge collection tagged can be to the users searching for one piece if the same works of that collection are splitted in individual pages (I'm thinking of Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe's example of a page without tags). --Feduol 20:47, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
I'd agree with that about seperating out collection pages into the original seperate works, far easier to tag actually but not always! Sallen112 21:49, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
If you don't have time for that now, mark it for cleanup and go back to it later. (And if you do manage to do all of it, THANKS!!) Steltz 14:27, 16 July 2015 (EDT)
I'll tag the entire collection this weekend. Cheers, --Feduol 19:52, 16 July 2015 (EDT)

Volte

This page Lautenspieler des XVI. Jahrhunderts (Chilesotti, Oscar) had a volte, and when I added that tag, it came up as unknown. It is a type in the MLA list, so is the problem that it just hasn't been used before and is new for us? Steltz 12:55, 15 July 2015 (EDT)

Yes, it's a new one. Quite a small category then :-) — P.davydov 13:57, 15 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Fifteen

  • We have reach below 500 workpages now! Not much left before were done! We need to also starting thinking about how we are going to do tagging duties starting next month and beyond. I can probably pitch in here and there but I probably won't want to do it daily really, maybe a couple times out of the week, I don't know. Lets put a post on the forums to discuss how we should approach doing the tagging on here for everyone who participated who would like to keep up with this long term. I imagine we should keep up with it as much as Carolus and the other Copyright reviewers similarly daily so we don't have a big backlog to deal with if we put it off for too long! We should need only a couple users to keep up with things. Sallen112 21:55, 15 July 2015 (EDT)
Once my dissertation is done, I can go back to doing some every day -- I used to try to take care of the new ones at least, but on days with big uploads, that's not possible. Steltz 12:58, 17 July 2015 (EDT)

Le message des anges (Anonymous)

According to CDPL, this work (with the arrangement on the page) is originally for Gevaert. Can anyone confirm and if so should we move this workpage to this composer? Sallen112 09:33, 16 July 2015 (EDT)

Actually, that is a duplicated page of Gevaert's Les anges dans nos campagnes. The score should be moved and the page deleted. --Feduol 19:52, 16 July 2015 (EDT)
Alright I will see about changing this... Sallen112 20:02, 16 July 2015 (EDT)
OK I deleted the Anonymous workpage above, can you check Les anges dans nos campagnes to see if the score is under the right tab? Sallen112 22:03, 16 July 2015 (EDT)
Sorry, Sallen. I thought that page was recently created. It's better to redirect to the corrected page, as other sites can link to that page. If you don't mind, I've restored the page and put the redirect link. The work is originally written for choir and the Taupin's version for choir and organ is actually the transcription. Sorry for undoing your work and, please, say something if you don't agree. Cheers, --Feduol 10:32, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
No its fine! I don't know the work at all so I had no idea, just going off by what I see on the workpage! You seemed to know the work so that is great! Sallen112 10:35, 17 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Sixteen

  • Not much to say for today, keep going guys! Has anyone have any thoughts for my post in Day Fifteen above? Sallen112 22:05, 16 July 2015 (EDT)

The Theremin on Ice (Kram, Richard)

  • Got another piece here with unusual instrumentation with our tagging system. I tagged it as "perc ghca thrm" since we don't have those glass instruments it specifies. Are these tags sufficient? Sallen112 10:12, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
Yes, that's correct — P.davydov 13:45, 17 July 2015 (EDT)

Origine des sciences (Rameau, Jean-Philippe)

  • I assume this is just "writings"? Sallen112 11:04, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
That's too general, try to see if it's organology, or music history, or theory, or a combination of those. I think we also have performance practice, but it doesn't sound like it's going to be that . . . Steltz 13:21, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
I don't know French so I tried to translate on Google Translate and it looks like it is something not exactly related to music. Something about the debate of the Origin of the Sciences... Sallen112 19:08, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
I've untagged it for now. I have tried to look for sources on what this book is about but I cannot find very much helpful info. I have looked on BNF but it hasn't helped determine the genre info for the work Sallen112 21:28, 18 July 2015 (EDT)

La Marseillaise (Rauchenecker, Georg Wilhelm)

  • I don't know if the genre for this piece is similar to the French National Anthem by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle? Sallen112 22:24, 17 July 2015 (EDT)
It is actually an arrangement of the same anthem, so should be similarly tagged (as you have done) — P.davydov 04:01, 18 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Seventeen

  • Close to less than 400 workpages left! Keep going I know we can finish this list! Sallen112 23:18, 17 July 2015 (EDT)

Las voules vous (Schmid II, Bernhard)

All that is on this page is arrangements by Anton Höger. He isn't the most accurate when it comes to his own sources, and as far as I can see, this is actually Bernhard Schmid I, not II. Here are the WorldCat entries: [[1]]. The Lasso work is there, and the collection was done 1577. Bernhard Schmid II would have been 10 years old. Does anyone see anything else that might make this wrong? Steltz 16:11, 18 July 2015 (EDT)

You're right, Steltz. That piece is an ornamented version for organ of Lassus' Las voules vous by Bernhard Schmid I and not by his son (it was published in Zwey Bücher einer neuen kunstlichen Tabulatur). Personally, I don't agree to have a separate page for an arrangement, but it was the policy we had when Höger started to upload his scores here. The issue was that Höger made arrangements based on other arrangements (16th-century embellished versions of original works), so he preferred to have his versions on the page of the arranger than the original composer. --Feduol 21:14, 18 July 2015 (EDT)
OK, thanks for moving it! Generally, I think at this point we should deal with his pages the way we deal with all others, without any special treatment. Steltz 12:48, 19 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Eighteen

  • Now officially under 400 pages! Only two full untagged webpages left of works, pretty amazing how far we have come in 18 days! Thanks everyone! Sallen112 23:39, 18 July 2015 (EDT)

Suauissimi Jesu (Giovannelli, Ruggiero)

  • Found on CDPL that this work is both secular and sacred. Is this more or less correct? Sallen112 23:52, 18 July 2015 (EDT)
It seems to be a setting of both a sacred Italian text as Suauissimi Jesu, and a secular Italian one as Soauissimo fiori. Quite unusual, but the "madrigals" tag can be used on the basis that it was first published in a collection of madrigals — P.davydov 04:41, 19 July 2015 (EDT)

Les Succès du Salon (Ritter, Ernst)

  • Terribly confusing page to tag. Looks like Schalltrichter handy work but there are no files on the page. Should we keep this or throw it out? I mean this is a collection page so we could keep it.... -Sallen112 11:11, 19 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Nineteen

  • Not too much happening today, glad to see were working through those crazy collection pages! I am trying to do some but they are alot to figure out! Sallen112 21:19, 19 July 2015 (EDT)

Day Twenty

  • Didn't progress very much today, was kind of busy with other things. Pages are not getting any easier to tag. About two weeks left until the end of the month! Sallen112 23:25, 20 July 2015 (EDT)
