Dover has only reprinted the 2nd edition of 1850.

According to Claudia Stevens Becker (A New Look at Schumann’s Impromptus, Musical Quarterly, Vol. 67, No. 4, Oct., 1981, pp. 568-586) these works occupied Schumann from 1830 to 1833 (first version) and even through to 1850 (publication of the sec ond version) (what period of time within that period he was working on them I may need to go read her entire article to determine, however. -Schissel )

per Rosen The Romantic Generation, first version completed 1833, revised in 1850—no work on the impromptus otherwise. Rosen argues that by 1850 Schumann was actually a little horrified by his early 1830s style & that was the basis for the revision, to excise the aspects that he now considered beyond the pale.
