The note on the first page translates thus: "This introduction was written by C. Cui. It was too inconvenient to begin the opera without an introduction. The themes of the Commandor (p.85, 120) and Don Juan (p.84) served as material for it."
(Note: Rimsky-Korsakov later composed his own introduction to the opera on Dargomysky's themes.)
