Island (Iceland) for recitation and piano accompaniment was composed around New Year 1928–29. No evidence survives of any contact between Nielsen and the author of the text. No public performance of Island in its original version for piano and recitation is known in the composer’s lifetime; but in 1930 Emil Reesen made an orchestral version that was played in a radio concert on the occasion of the Iceland parliament’s millennial celebrations.
