Grove Music says "Although his three operatic works L’alcade de la vega, Le colporteur, and Guise were given as comic operas at the time, it is clear that they approached the grand opera genre, which explains the notably cool reception they received from the critics, who thought it inappropriate to stage such dramatic works at the Opéra-Comique."

One of his most popular operas if the number of works by other composers based on melodies "from le Colporteur" is any judge at all. (Kuhlau composed one, for example (Introduction and Rondo on 'Le Colporteur', Op.98a, 1829; also his Op.96) as did Louise Farrenc (her Op.10) and others.)

Published in vocal score in 1829 (Hofmeister's Monatsbericht (1829), p.19) if not earlier.
