History

Founded in 1848 (or 1846?) by George W. Lee (d. 1875) and Julius Walker (d. 1857). In 1856 (?), they bought the major publishing firm of George Willig, for which they had once both worked. Lee & Walker was in turn sold to Oliver Ditson of Boston in 1875. (According to "Grove's dictionary of music and musicians", American Supplement, 1920, page 190, article on Ditson Company: "In 1875 the stock of Lee & Walker in Philadelphia was purchased and the house of J. E. Ditson & Co. established, led by another son (discontinued in 1910).")

Sources Consulted

  • Scores from Lee & Walker, as often for legal reasons in the 19th century United States, generally have their own copyright either taken out by the composer or by the company - they rarely lack any copyright date at all, as more often with contemporary European scores. So constructing a plate table is somewhat easier.
