Neue Liszt-Ausgabe (abbreviated as "NLA"; full name, Franz Liszt. Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke) is the second complete authentic edition of the music of Franz Liszt. The complete edition is based on all the available manuscript and printed sources of Liszt's works. The edition was published jointly by Edition Musica Budapest and the Bärenreiter-Verlag Kassel from 1970 to present. Cooperation between the Bärenreiter-Verlag and Editio Musica Budapest came to an end in 1985 with the completion of series 1, however EMB has independently continued the series.

Under Canadian law, a work must contain a sufficient amount of original material to qualify for copyright protection - which is usually described as the 'threshold of originality.' Works which consist of collation and comparison of public domain sources, though they often require intensive research and scholarship, fail to meet this test under the copyright statutes of many nations around the world, including Canada. However, the determination of originality is ultimately up to a court, since there is no specific language in the Canadian statute explicitly defining which items are considered original enough to meet the 'threshold of originality' on a given editor's part. It is also true that such editions have been granted a special, limited-term, copyright in certain countries (notably Germany, the UK, and Italy), and in the EU itself. IMSLP, though it is under no sort of legal obligation to do so, voluntarily enforces a term of 25 years from date of publication for such modern, scholarly editions, which originate in the European Union.

Before its 1989 demise, the Hungarian communist state published works of living or deceased persons on which the state claimed copyright. Editio Musica Budapest (founded in 1950) was a government agency formed by government expropriation of privately-owned publishing firms like Roszavolgyi, Rozsnyai, and others at the start of the Soviet occupation. Although original works of contemporary Hungarian composers have been judged to be the vaild copyrights of the composers themselves or their heirs in most Western countries, urtext or critical editions published during this era (1945-1989) have not been considered to be subject of copyright, as such editions were prepared by government employees working for a state agency as part of their employment - thus government works. Moreover, the copyright owner itself (the Hungarian communist government) ceased to exist. See this section on USSR editions for more information.

Additionally, Section 70 of the German copyright law states that scientific editions (editions which are produced as a result of scientific analysis, i.e. urtext) are entitled to only a limited copyright term of publication plus 25 years. Since series 1 of Neue Liszt-Ausgabe was published jointly with the German publisher Bärenreiter, all volumes in series 1 that are older than 25 years are public domain in Germany and all published more than 30 years ago are public domain in the EU as a whole.
