Comments for Original Version
'Ludi Musici' is a collection of bicinia pieces originally written for treble and tenor recorders. It is named after the 'Ludi Musici' of Samuel Scheidt who published four books of pieces with that title, (sadly only one has survived to posterity). Most of Scheidt's pieces are based on pre-existing material, such as ballad tunes, like the 7 pieces of this Ludi Musici.
The composer has made versions for two viols and two violins but the 2-octave range of the recorder explains why the full range of the string instruments is not used. Flutes could play the recorder version as they are easily within range and of similar timbre.
The pieces are: (1) Variations on Brigg Fair, (2) Variations on Dives and Lazarus, (3) La Battaglia, (4) The Cuckoo, (5) Lord Willoughby’s Welcome Home, (6) La Cioccona, (7) Ich Stund an Einem Morgen.
The tune Dives and Lazarus occurs throughout the British Isles and is known as Star of the County Down in Ireland. Vaughan Williams used it for a set of variations.
The recorder versions are in an adjacent piece file so as to be picked up as recorder duets.
Comments for Lute Version
This is a version of Ludi Musici, (see original version for notes), made by the composer for two lutes. It is more or less the recorder version transposed, with little thickening of texture as the original 2-part conception is retained.
