Note : The first item (meaning something like 'Patched-up Piece' or 'Piece added as an Afterthought') started as a continuation of the second part of the Diptyque, it being a "left-over" from the Londonderry Air variations. Accordingly it was expanded more than each item in the suite.
The other pieces were devised as "fillers" but took on a form of independence in the compositional process : 'Pièce Ajourée' means something like 'Piece with a hole/hollow part', probably because it begins with a pedal solo. 'Pièce Bicaudale' alludes to the double ending coda. Of late, this last piece has been extensively overhauled.
