- Composed between 1854 and 1859 for piano with orchestra, using material intended for a projected symphony (1854) and sonata for two pianos (c.1855-58), neither of which was completed.
- Also arranged for 2 pianos and for piano 4 hands by Brahms.

- The first editions of the full score and 2-piano arrangement did not appear until 1875.
