I provide the original scanned version and the filtered, because the filter does some changes (smoothening, sharpening borders) and some portions of the scan get lost sometimes (when they are too small e.g.) - so you can choose your favorite. You may ask me for a manually cleaned version.

Version History

  • Composed for piano trio, 1853–54.
  • Revised by Brahms in 1889. "The first movement is shortened by about half the original length, the second and third movements by a third. In the first and last movements, Brahms completely replaced the original second themes with new ones, in the first movement he took out a long fugue, in the Adagio he erased an Allegro middle section, and in the Finale he left out quotes of Beethoven and Schubert Lieder." Oberon Trio
And those are just some of the major changes; this is not so much a revision as an overhaul. The first change is that a miscalculation, a (arguably) too-early entrance by the violin, is removed in the later version...) - Schissel
The second theme of the finale is derived from a quote from Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte, the same quote that was used in Schumann's Fantaisie Op. 17; this could be part of the reason it was changed. The revised outer movements have new development sections and much more abbreviated, less literal recapitulations (the 1st movement benefits from this in particular, not only because the original version can run to some 20 minutes). Only the second movement avoided significant structural overhauls, and is in fact almost completely identical in both versions (the revision has a new coda, and the distribution of the parts is changed slightly). - CI
  • Arrangement of the Second Version For Piano 4 hands by Robert Keller 1891, Simrock, Plate 9546

A recording of both versions in a Challenge Classics 2-CD set shows some contrast: the first version in that recording runs to almost 45 minutes, the revised version to about 35 (probably with repeat? - Schissel)
