History

Frederick Pitman (1828-1886), younger brother of Isaac Pitman (1813–1897) who invented the popular shorthand system, began music publishing in 1862 in London, producing mainly domestic music, such as the songs of Balfe. On his death in 1886 the firm continued under his name until 1900 when it was bought by Hart & Co. (started 1881). The business Pitman, Hart & Co. operated until about 1960 when it was taken over by J.B. Cramer.
