Apart from his original creations, W.Macfarren was an active editor as appears from his Collection of 215 (as it stood at the time of the printing of the Back Page) "Sterling Compositions", with the General Title "Popular Classics", organized in an indeterminate number of Series, with an indication of difficulty. This one is the 4th, comprising 12 pieces, as is established on the Title Page. It is unclear at what exact time the English fingering used in this edition was abandoned for the Continental one. It may just have been a gradual post-Victorian transition after a period of co-existence.
