Origially included as No. 2 of the Pièces Pittoresques. The main theme is taken from Chabrier's operetta Fisch-Ton-Kan of 1864. The title was likely given by the publisher Enoch et Costallat, who first issued the work posthumously in 1897 as No. 5 of the Cinq Morceaux pour Piano.
