Sauer & Leidesdorf

History

Vienna-based publishing house. After joining Joseph Eder's Kunst- und Musikalienverlag in 1796, Ignaz Sauer (1759–1833) set up his own business, the Kunstverlag Zu den Sieben Schwestern in 1798. The first music printed lithographically in Austria was published by Sauer in 1801 (12 Ländler by F. M. Pecháček). However, the business fell into financial difficulties due to the Napoleonic wars, and in 1813 Sauer was forced to give up the business premises.
On 27 July 1822, Sauer and Maximilian Joseph Leidesdorf (1787–1840) entered into a contract to create the publishing company Sauer & Leidesdorf in Vienna. After the contract was dissolved on February 6, 1826 Leidesdorf carried on the business under his own name. In 1834 Leidesdorf sold out to the publisher Anton Berka, who in turn sold to Diabelli in 1835. In addition to publishing Leidesdorf's own compositions the firm is today most noteworthy for having published the first edition of the 11 Bagatelles, Op.119, by Ludwig van Beethoven and several songs by Franz Schubert.
