Misc. Comments
Liszt edited Schubert's Op.90 and Op.142 in 1868-69. They were published in the early 1870s by J.G. Cotta'sche Buchhandl in Stuttgart. Following are three excerpts from F. Liszt's letters to S. Lebert (co-editor) were the editorial work on Schubert's Impromtus are mentioned:
No.1: Letter to Prof. Dr. S. Lebert from F. Liszt dated October 19th, 1868, Rome:
- "The Schubert volume I shall limit to... some 8 Impromptus..."
No.2: Letter to Prof. Dr. S. Lebert from F. Liszt dated December 2nd, 1868, Villa d'Este:
- "Let us limit our edition of Schubert's pianoforte compositions to... 2 books of Impromptus,... All this will be sent to you forthwith..."
No.3: Letter to Prof. Dr. S. Lebert from F. Liszt dated January 10th, 1870, Villa d'Este:
- "The proofs of Weber's and Schubert's Sonatas were despatched to Stuttgart in two parcels by rail the day before yesterday... As soon as you send me...; ere long you will receive Schubert's Impromptus... .
- My endeavor with this work is to avoid all quibbling and pretentiousness, and to make the edition a practical one for teachers and players. And for this reason at the very last I added a goodly amount of fingering and pedal marks... and I trust that the trouble it causes will not prove superfluous..."
