Commentary on the movements
- [Versus 1 Chorale]: Sei Lob und Ehr' dem höchsten Gut. The chorale is sung plain to a lively instrumental accompaniment, perpetuum mobile. The additional colours of flutes lend this movement a relaxed air.
- Versus 2 Recitativo (Bass): Es danken dir die Himmelsheer. Secco recitative.
- Versus 3 [Aria] (Tenor): Was unser Gott geschaffen hat. Two oboes d'amore complement the tenor's sorrowful line to make this a sharp contrast from the previous two movements
- Versus 4 Choraliter: Ich rief dem Herrn in meiner Not. A plain chorale setting.
- Versus 5 Recitativo (Alto): Der Herr ist noch und nimmer nicht. Recitative with string accompaniment-arioso with continuo only.
- Versus 6 [Aria] (Bass): Wenn Trost und Hülf ermangeln muß. Solo violin, but not virtuosic. This bass aria contains one of Bach's most declamatory instrumental lines, as well as a highly melodic bass line.
- Versus 7 [Aria] (Alto): Ich will dich all mein Leben lang. Flutes and strings play in a relaxed dance-like aria.
- Versus 8 Recitativo (Tenor): Ihr, die ihr Christi Namen nennt. Secco recitative.
- Versus 9 Chorale: So kommet vor sein Angesicht. A reprise of the first movement with a new text.
