Serenade was written by the poet Hother Ploug as a tribute to Peter Heise's widow, Vilhelmine Heise, on the occasion of her birthday on 8 February 1907. The following day, Nielsen made a choral setting of the text, which was performed at a gathering in Mrs Heise's home two days later.
