Quartet numbering in current complete recordings and some performances has been increased by one to incorporate the recently discovered string quartet no.1 in C, Op.2 ; so one now sees this referred to as quartet no.4, where recordings and scores before a certain date or so call it quartet no.3.

Hindemith wrote seven string quartets; Schott published all except for Op.2 (String Quartet No.1). The traditional numbering, with Op.10 (String Quartet No. 2) as the first quartet, is Schott's; throughout his lifetime and with a high degree of consistency, Hindemith numbered the Op.2 quartet as his first, and the remaining six quartets as Nos.2-7. The Op.22 quartet is even identified as No.4 on the program of its premiere performance. Since the early 1990s, all Schott printings of the quartets make use of Hindemith's own numbering.

Often time signature-less score. Openings of first and second movements alternate 4/4 and 5/4, the finale 4/4 and 2/4. (Folgt sofort and the Italian attacca are at least basically the same...)
