Navigation etc.

  • MPH's notes claim that the symphony was composed in 1888 and early 1889.
    The program notes to the premiere performance claim that composition began in the summer of 1887 (and the work completed then and revised substantially before 1889.)

Bernard Benoliel in "Parry Before Jerusalem" (2017) claims the work was sketched in 1887 and not initially named a symphony and worked on throughout 1888 alongside the 4th symphony; he also mentions revisions in 1895 that added trombones (not originally in the score..), also, incorporated into the 1907 published version.
