Talk:List of works by Giovanni Sgambati

Here is an unsourced worklist using "Opus Numbers" most different from those with which the works were actually published with (by Schott, anyway- possibly they were published by Ricordi with these different numbers, but it does not say). What are the meanings of these different numbers, which are never used on those rare occasions Sgambati's music is recorded (op. 15 is always used with the piano concerto, op. 17 with the string quartet on its two or three recordings- not op.12)- what use is a list that does not match with recordings but only with some worklist that does not make any references to anything except to what it is not? IIRC we've already come across quite a lot of discrepancies concerning Sgambati's opus numbering (I remember starting a forum topic about La Gondoleira a while back). Almost certainly, different publishers used their own systems, as was sadly the case so much of the time in those days. Probably the thing to do would be to give the main list in whatever Grove uses (does it give a listing?), and parenthetically mention what number(s) were used for each work by both publishers. That might take rather a lot of research, however... KGill talk email 16:29, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

...maybe I was too hasty moving the piano concerto from op. 10 to op. 15 after all then. Would that there were, as with Mozart, Krommer, Martinu and others, a cataloguing system. Maybe there is. Eric 16:33, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
