Version History
- Composed for solo voices, chorus and orchestra, 1863–66 (= 1st version)
- Revised by Smetana, 1866
- after the first two performances, a "Gypsy ballet" borrowed from The Brandenburgers in Bohemia was introduced to replace a duet for Esmerelda and the Circus Master
- Further revised by Smetana, 1868–69 (= 2nd version)
- Act I was divided into two scenes, with a new drinking chorus in the second scene, a new polka at the start of Act II, and an extended version of Mařenka’s final solo
- Further revised by Smetana, 1869 (= 3rd version)
- now in 3 acts, the first of which concluded with the polka and a new furiant; Act III included a new skočná (replacing the 'Gypsy ballet'), and a new march to introduce the circus troupe
- Further revised by Smetana, 1870 (= 4th version)
- in the final 'definitive' version, new recitatives replaced spoken dialogue, and the furiant was moved from the end of Act I to after the drinking chorus in Act II
