Misc. Comments

  • According to this RISM entry, this appeared as no.9 of Madrigale a 3, but also states that "At the top of the canto: 'The Score is in y|.e 1.|s Vol. of Madrigals & c fo 301'. This score is now missing".
  • It is unknown whether its printing in Byrd's Psalms, Songs and Sonnets of 1611 pre-dates the Madrigale a 3, so the date of 1611 for first publication could be incorrect and subject to correction.
  • The original voicing of the song apparently had the first two parts in C1 clef, i.e. soprano, and the bottom line was C3 clef, which could be alto, contralto or tenor
