Begun in 1887, shelved when the commissioning authority would not pledge in advance to performance of a work of unknown size by a composer not much known in Britain (presumably), and revised and completed in 1913.

Versions in French and German were also prepared a few years later.

The most recent publications (1985) say "double chorus" rather than choir.
