Misc. Comments

This opera was left unfinished by Dargomyzhsky at his death. According to his wishes, Cui completed composition of the end of Act 1, Tableau 1, and Rimsky-Korsakov orchestrated the entire opera. The latter also rewrote a few passages which are marked in the vocal score with Dargomyzhsky's originals. Along with Cui's orchestral introduction (published separately from the vocal score), these circumstances explain the edition of 1871.

Many years later Rimsky-Korsakov re-edited and re-orchestrated the entire work and composed a new introduction; this constitutes the revised edition of 1902 and is the standard version.
