Misc. Notes Also quite different from its starting point. Completely revised and considerably modified on Dec. 31st 2017, including a new A3 cover design, and an introductory poem in French. Like the cello and violin piece, this is not really an arrangement, but a reinterpretation. Phrasings have been (momentarily ?) left out. Phrasings reinstated March 2018.

Misc. Notes While only a couple of measures longer (60 bars vs. 58), the cello and piano setting is much more than a mere transcription of the piano original. However, this being the first arrangement of the set, it adheres more closely to the original, as if the companion pieces, having been composed afterwards, progressively lost touch with it.

Misc. Comments

  • The term "skirl" is used euphonically, not in reference to bagpipes (one may remember Woody Allen's definition of a gentleman), but it is hard if not impossible to find a French equivalent. The adjective "stridulant" is used as a possible semantic (and punning : strie du lent) transfer, although it over-emphasizes the squawking or shrill cries of the bird rather than its flapping wings when taking off or graceful gliding movements on a pool of water, for which the term "whirl" might have been another approximation, close to "world". The arrangements of this piano piece are categorized as paraphrases for different combinations of string instruments as they develop in completely different directions compared to the original piano piece, as if the bird's calls were growing more and more indistinct in distance as in time. The origin of this work is rather muddled. It was first composed concluding the first part of a piece belonging to a set entitled Décalages, which has since been completely reworked with additional pieces named Distractions. As a consequence this original version has not been preserved in its new format except as an "echo" in the third number (Swirling Swans).
