Section Listing

  1. Duet: Sie werden euch in den Bann thun. The opening text is in two parts, the first of which is this duet. An imitative texture opens this movement. The low ranges of the voices colours this movement greatly. g minor
  2. Chorus: Es Kömmt aber die Zeit. Following attacca, this movement exposes the rest of the text. The tempo speeds up and the texture thins out until polyphony comes back at "Es kömmt aber die Zeit, daß" (II). g minor
  3. Aria (Alto): Christen müssen auf der Erden. Obbligto oboe supports the alto in this "calm" movement. c minor
  4. Choral: Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid. A setting of this choral in the tenor, unornamented, supported by continuo ostinato. E Major
  5. Recitativo (Bass): Es sucht der Antichrist. Secco recitative. g minor-d minor
  6. Aria (Soprano): Es ist und bleibt der Christen Trost. A vivid contrast to the somewhat dark tone of the the preceding movements, in more dancing figurations. B Major
  7. Choral: So sei nun, Seele, deine. A plain chorale setting. B Major
