File Formats

Dear ClassicalComposers, Thanks for your contribution. Please note that we have deprecated .MUS files here and now prefer a PDF in addition to the .MUS file if you wish to upload .MUS files here. This should be simple to do. We'll combine the PDF with the .MUS when you upload it. Thanks, Carolus 00:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC) (IMSLP Copyright Admin)

I'm sorry, but I can't convert .MUS files to PDF version. Can you help me with that, please? ClassicalComposers 01:34, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I'd be happy to, but will be leaving soon for a vacation. I recommend you post a question over at the forum, where there are lots of very knowledgeable people to help. Best Wishes, Carolus 05:38, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm grateful to hear that you are willing to help me, but how will you achieve it? By a software, or by other means? ClassicalComposers 04:19, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Converting .MUS to .PDF

Hi. Actually, I think the suggestion posed on Carolus' board was better regarding you installing a simple, free PDF driver. There are many out there such as CutePDF or PDF995. After installing the driver, simply go to 'File' -> 'Print' and choose the PDF driver to convert it to PDF. Daphnis 04:24, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Do you know any other PDF drivers with better quality? I tried both of the ones you recommended and 1. you can't select the custom paper size, and 2. The quality is really bad. The beams on all the semiquavers and demisemiquavers stick together. ClassicalComposers 23:37, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi. First, there's no need to double-post a message to two talk pages. I'm watching yours, so any change you make I receive email notification. Secondly, there are several free PDF drivers available. Just do a google search. Since I use Finale and not Allegro, I would suspect the papersize is a function of the page setup within the program and not the PDF driver. I'm also not sure what you mean by "the semiquavers and demisemiquavers stick together". I assume this is something other than beam separation (another function of the program). Try changing the output resolution to about 1200dpi for the PDF output. Daphnis 23:41, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, so can you export directly to PDF from Finale? ClassicalComposers 23:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Not on Windows and not without the addition of a PDF driver, free or commercial. Daphnis 23:52, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
But do you use Windows? ClassicalComposers 23:54, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes. Daphnis 23:54, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
OK. If I upload the .MUS files, will someone, by chance, convert it? ClassicalComposers 23:55, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps, although I realized I don't have it installed on my main machine any longer. Best to reply in the forum with this request. Daphnis 23:57, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Do I use the same username? ClassicalComposers 23:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Whichever username you originally registered on the forum is the one you'll use. The wiki and the forum are on separate accounts. Daphnis 00:00, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Projects

Just saying-but the Mozart symphonies and piano concertos have already been done (really nicely - and also in finale) by Gory - so something else might be more worthwhile. Just FYI-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 02:12, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I know that. I am just doing the original version (unedited and by Mozart) with German and English text. ClassicalComposers 22:19, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
What do you mean by "with German and English Text?"-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 20:42, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I mean that the title and all notes are in German. ClassicalComposers 01:15, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
I have your talk page on my watchlist already ;) I'm just on at different times. I guess that's fine. It just seems like you could be spending your time more productively (operas! Parts wanted!S)-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 01:42, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
I really think that your time would be better spent doing things that we don't already have scores for...these feel *almost* redundant. Why not something that we need, like Les Troyens, which would be one of the most useful score we could have?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:47, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
I decided to do a project on all of J. S. Bach's concertos. The ones that are uploaded from the Bach Augsgabe aren't really good, so that's what I decided to do. First thing's first. ClassicalComposers 02:55, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
P.S. What is Les Troyens?
P.P.S. Do you know any good printer drivers? The ones I tried gave me really blurry notes, and I would love one like the one Gory's got, but problem is, I don't know which one he (or she) uses.
Cool. Les Troyens is Berlioz's second opera.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:03, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

G. Henle Verlag

Hi. Do you know if it is legal to upload scores published by G. Henle? ClassicalComposers 02:08, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

It depends. If published more than 30 years ago, it's usually urtext and thus PD in Canada and the EU (Legal), but it will not be released, because of its US status. Sometimes, however, they're PD in the U.S. If you talk to Carolus, and name the editions, then he will be able to tell you exact status - but he's on vacation right now until next month. So...name the editions on the forums and hopefully you'll get a response. Does that answer your question?-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 02:12, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes. That does answer my question, but I have a few editions that say that they're urtext on the covers, but they say it was published in 2007 on the inside. ClassicalComposers 03:43, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Definitely not.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:45, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes, anything that you have published by Henle will not be available to the general public for about 90 years, so don't waste your time with it.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:49, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Mozart

We already have a page for K.547. There is no need to create a superflous one. Also, where did you get K.498a for the B-flat sonata? It appears in neither K1 or K6 that way. Thanks, Carolus 20:48, 31 October 2009 (UTC) (IMSLP Copyright admin)

K3. ClassicalComposers 20:50, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Moving Titles Around

Kindly do not move titles around for major composers like Mozart. Your arbitrary move of K.547a has now resulted in a fair number of links that no longer function. If you have a legitimate reason to change a title, please bring it up on the forum so that the various contributors here can discuss the pros and cons of having one way or the other. We generally follow the format used by the Library of Congress' Name and Title authorities, unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. Thanks, Carolus 21:02, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

When I moved the page, was there not a redirect page created? ClassicalComposers 21:09, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, there was, but because this is an older page which has been redirected a number of times already, several links were rendered non-functioning. I expect both of these odd sonatas will ultimately have to be moved again to the K.Anh.135 and 136 as we do not use K3 here in primary listings. Do you happen to know who the editor(s) of the Muzgiz edition were? Carolus 21:15, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Why do we not insert any space between the opus and the opus number? And also, why are the letters in the K6 numbers (Ex: 'K. 73l') in superscript? ClassicalComposers 21:20, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Because it's neater and easier to read. And probably LOC does likewise (I haven't checked). Should the broken redirects be fixed? KGill talk email 21:25, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Also, please note that we list the older editions of works first, the new editions and typesets later. That's why I moved the Soviet (1963 edition) of K.547 to the bottom and had the older 1890s Schirmer on top. We have a style guide here, which I suggest you familiarize yourself with. BTW, I do think that Sonata is likely a better term for the K.Anh.135 than Sonatina, or at least is the term more frequently encountered for that piece. 21:37, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, no hurt feelings involved, right? ClassicalComposers 21:44, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
No big deal. You're still learning the routine around here. Those two Mozart sonatas have been really problematic from the standpoint of music librarians and Mozart scholars for a long time. As you can see by looking at the scores, they were referred to as Sonatas Nos.19 and 20 in a number of publications. That's one of the reasons we have to be very consistent in the way we handle such works. Carolus 21:50, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi "ClassicalComposers"
I noticed you've (in my opinion, needlessly) altered the appearance of the Mozart Piano Sonatas template (where most of the works were described by KV, rather than K.) by shifting a few items around, and removing the superscripts. You might want to know the rationale behind this, and the various other templates for the larger collections of Mozart's works.
Firstly, I am fairly convinced (from a survey of the entire Neue Mozart-Ausgabe) that the page titles adopted by IMSLP for virtually all of Mozart's works, for consistency and correctness, should probably have followed the NMA's numberings and title descriptions. Unfortunately, since most of the files uploaded have come from older editions, the Breitkopf & Härtel especially, so generally have the current page titles - occasionally with radically incorrect or outdated information. However, it would be a rather huge amount of work to repair the pages already named, which often have a variety of other deficiencies; works in various series (symphonies, string quartets, concertos, all numbered by the multiple dozen) lack keys, sobriquets, and generally favour the first KV catalogue numbering over KV3/KV6. Also, it's generally not a good idea to move huge numbers of pages around without putting a rational case for it, over at the IMSLP forums.
Given the limitations in sorting the works on the Mozart works page, the templates deliberately refrain from listing the works in the same order, but attempt to reflect the ordering found in the NMA. This however, requires a considerable degree of caution, since as has been pointed out, the ordering in the piano sonatas for example, is quite different in places, because the sonata numbers were assigned at a time when the chronological order was not sufficiently well known; where the ordering is no longer right, the "No." is given in inverted commas to indicate the discrepancy.
It's questionable whether the two unnumbered sonatas should be listed at all: KV Anh.135 (547a) is excluded from the NMA altogether, whereas KV Anh.136 (498a) is a melange of four movements, each with a different numbering in the KV6 Anhang.

Beethoven Sonatinas

Are these your typesets? Thanks, Carolus 18:38, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Projekt Musik was also the info for the Casanova, Carolus...-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 19:35, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes, these are my typesets. I decided to focus on piano works first, since orchestral works take too much time. ClassicalComposers 19:39, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
They are quite well done, BTW. Congratulations, and a nice addition. Thanks! Carolus 05:47, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Files

I'll delete it as long as you replace it with a PDF version. And to make it easier to find that you want it to be deleted, you can edit the page to include this template: {{delete|reason}}. This puts the page in a category where it is easy to find. :-) KGill talk email 02:55, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Polonaise in F by J.C.F. Bach

Hi, I've restored the Polonaise and added a note. However, in the future please create pages just short time before you to upload files. We have the strict policy here to delete empty work pages and categories after a couple of days. Otherwise we would lose track and the site would be filled with empty pages. Thanks. Hobbypianist 20:11, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Userboxes

I saw your note on Feldmahler's talk page. Are you familiar enough with wiki to design this system (I'm pretty sure his reply was a go-ahead). There are a few considerations:

  1. We need to add only what's necessary (unecessary pages drive me nuts). Perhaps a "userbox" wishlist/forum topic would be good.
  2. More importantly, how many people would use, etc. the system? In general, starting a forum topic is the way to go, so once it's back up, that would be the first course. In the meantime, get set up (you can set up drafts as subpages of your userpage - i.e. User:ClassicalComposers/Template:UserboxFirefox; etc.).
  3. I believe that I imported the Template:Userbox when I made some for user types. That might help ;)-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 13:32, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

About name

Yes, officially registered name is "Xu, S.", on ID card of PRC. "Xavier" is an attached name using in English environments and can be regarded formal.

New Engravings

Excellent work! You obviously know your way around Finale. Cheers, Carolus 06:10, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Neue Mozart Ausgabe

I see you probably answered your own question, but the answer is "no", for the most part. If you happen to find some NMA items which have been reprinted by Kalmus, they can be uploaded as they are free in the USA and will not be subject to the [TB] (temporary block) tag. There are not a lot of these. The Robbins-Landon edition of the late symphonies (39-41), Abduction from the Seraglio and a few other titles are about it. Anything issued after 1963 is off limits, and a about half of the things issued before then were renewed and thus off limits as well. Carolus 06:25, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Bach: Orchestral Suites (Overtures), BWV 1066-1069

Hi, While I think we are going to ultimately have to split the original entry into a separate page for each of the four suites, perhaps you should post a query on the forums before undertaking this project. There are parts that will be added soon from the Orchestral Parts Project, and I notice there are already a number of arrangements on the main page. Thanks, Carolus 02:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Sorry! I'm done, by the way...just add the template to the other pages, and it'll work fine.-- Snailey Talk to Me Email me 03:00, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, Perlnerd666, for creating the template for Bach's orchestral suites. It would've taken me a million years! I have made some minor adjustments to it, and you can see the current version here. I finished creating all the pages for Bach's orchestral suites already. ClassicalComposers 03:24, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Looks good. It was a needed improvement with the parts coming. One question: Where did the Reger piano transcriptions go that were on the original page? Are you breaking the file up to spread across the four new pages? Thanks, Carolus 06:17, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
