User talk:Leonard Vertighel/archive1

Hi there Leonard! Welcome to IMSLP! And thanks for translating IMSLP to Italian :)

I've officially added the Italian translation to the code, so now the Italian main page should show if the language setting in your preferences is set to Italian :) You might need to clear the browser cache or force a page reload though.

Couperin

Hi, thanks for pointing that. Let me know (if you have already do it) what pages are missing. I will scan them ( I have the Dover Reprint) cheers and great you like them! As you can see I've uploaded other stuff from Couperin. nachoBA

Welcome to Admin/Moderatordom

As per our discussion on my talk page, I'm making you an admin/moderator of IMSLP :) Since you were a previous Wikipedia admin, I think I don't have to say too much about it, but there is a policy page in case of doubt :)

About the empty composer category/work page issue, I would put a {{MsgWelcome}} template on the user talk page (this template should really be put on the talk page of every user which just started to contribute files to IMSLP), with a note saying that either the empty category/work page will be deleted soon, or that it is already deleted. I'd wait for 1 day before deleting an empty category or work page, though there are certain circumstances (ex. someone starts mass creating categories) in which case it'd be a good idea to stop them asap, since they are unlikely to use the categories they've created anyway.

Also... I think the Wikipedia entry above sounds good... would it be a good idea to put it on Wikipedia now, or wait some more? I'd think it is good enough, but I'm not as familiar with Wikipedia's notability criteria as you... :) --Feldmahler 18:06, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

P.S. I don't think there will be nearly as much blaming going on on IMSLP since not only are we a smaller community, the content of IMSLP is much less debatable than that of Wikipedia. Plus, I'll cover for you if/when problems arise hehe :) --Feldmahler 18:10, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

Filenames

Hi Leonard! It is fine to not worry about filenames anymore (even if they are really bad), because in a month or so I'll be rewriting the IMSLP index and imaging systems, and one of the features will be the automatic renaming on submission of files to a standard format Composerlastname - Workpagename (Filedescription) [#imslpindex].pdf. This should fix all problems with file names :) I'll also be renaming existing files. --Feldmahler 12:48, 7 April 2007 (EDT)

OK, thanks for the info. In this case however, it was actually you who started renaming the file (last year - see the uploader at Image:Liszt - Rakoczy March.pdf :)), but apparently you forgot about it halfway through and left the duplicate file :) So I thought it best to delete the file with the wrong name and leave only your upload. By the way, what should I do with your Image:Debussy - 6 Epigraphes Antiques.pdf? --Leonard Vertighel 13:05, 7 April 2007 (EDT)
Good question... I forgot why I uploaded it myself haha. Leave it there and I'll deal with it later :) --Feldmahler 13:26, 7 April 2007 (EDT)

Mahler Piano Quartet

Hi Leonard! Since you seem to be the assistant admin and Feldmahler's got his hands full right now, I'm pointing you to this forum topic, which requests a deletion of Piano Quartet in A minor (Mahler, Gustav). Thanks! --Emeraldimp 12:17, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

Seems I came too late ;) Feel free to notify me again whenever some admin work needs to be done, maybe next time I'll be around in time. --Leonard Vertighel 14:50, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

Wow... DJVU collision

It seems like out of a very interesting coincidence you uploaded another DJVU placeholder file 1 minute before I uploaded mine, and to the same filename (I didn't know you already uploaded one)! In any case, since it is already done, I'll delete the old version (your placeholder) since it is 14 bytes larger than mine (haha). But that's an amazing coincidence :) --Feldmahler 17:00, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

How dare you delete my amazing work of art?! I can't believe it... (by the way, how about a wikipedia: interwiki prefix for easier linking to Wikipedia?) --Leonard Vertighel 17:07, 16 April 2007 (EDT)
Hahaha.... about Wikipedia, that's a good point. I'm going to add it right now :) Try it in a few minutes. --Feldmahler 17:19, 16 April 2007 (EDT)
Seems to work - thanks! --Leonard Vertighel 17:24, 16 April 2007 (EDT)
It even works for other languages. --Leonard Vertighel 17:27, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

ideas on IMSLP:maintenance

Hi Leonard,

Since I learned that there seems to be an acute shortage of time for those working on the website, I threw up the concept of centralizing all plans about the website that have passed the precontemplation phase at IMSLP:Maintenance. This fits in the idea of the community portal, and gives the possibility of helping out (I don't have any programming skills, alas). What do you think? --Peter talk 07:36, 2 May 2007 (EDT)

Great idea. I will integrate a few things into the Maintenance section when I get around to it. By the way, if you want to make changes or additions to the Community Portal, feel free to do so - I don't want to "monopolize" it. --Leonard Vertighel 12:03, 2 May 2007 (EDT)

Bach BWV 54 Redundant score

Hi Leonard,

Thanks for letting me know about the stale scores for BWV 54. I uploaded them before I realized that IMSLP already had scans of another edition. The PDFs I uploaded are not scans, but my own edition which is substantially the same as what's already on the site --- just a little clearer (since it's a PDF generated directly from a scoring program, and not an optical scan). Do you think they are worth adding? If so, please remind me where the instructions are for adding them; if not, feel free to delete them. Thanks.--Musanim 15:59, 1 June 2007 (EDT)

Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto

Hi, I have the score of Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto, but this was edited on 1993 by Hildegard Publishing Company. So I would like to know if I can Upload This Score. Thanks.

I have copied your post to this forum thread. Somebody will reply shortly to your question. --Leonard Vertighel 17:04, 30 June 2007 (EDT)

Moving Greek pages

Hello there Leonard :)

I couldn't help but notice that you took the liberty to move some pages of the Greek translation of IMSLP. In particular, I noticed you moved all the Greek help pages to the same pages, and replacing the Greek translation of "Help:" with the English "Help:" in the title. I do understand that this should be corrected because it causes problems with the search engine of the site, but I have some complaints. To begin with, moving the pages interfered with the Greek navigation template that is used in the Greek Help pages and now I have to change it back, and here another problem: the fact that I didn't get notified about any of the changes, despite the fact that I watch all of the pages that I've created, and I check my watching list several times per day. In order for this community to work properly, cooperation and proper communication is needed. How can I keep track of the pages that I've created if other people make major changes on them, and I don't get notified either by Mediawiki or by the user himself?

I am not saying you shouldn't have moved the pages, just that you should have informed me first so I would have committed the changes in a more organised matter, and I would thus be totally aware of the Greek IMSLP translation's status, which I should be since I am the only responsible person for the translation and maintenance of the Greek IMSLP.

Thanks for the changes anyway, I'll try and fix everything so it looks normal again.

Take care! ~ jujimufu 14:46, 7 July 2007 (EDT)

Hi Jujimufu, sorry for doing things in a somewhat rushed way, but I'm rather busy these days. However, moving pages should not cause any problems at all, since the redirects make sure that all links (including navigation templates) still work. I've also run my bot just now to fix all multiple redirects (I see that your recent page moves have created some more, so I'll run the bot again soon).
As for the watchlist, I was not aware of this issue. You might wish to file a feature request for MediaWiki asking that page moves be displayed in the watchlists, too (I had never noticed that this was not the case).
--Leonard Vertighel 15:19, 7 July 2007 (EDT)
I am sorry about moving pages not appearing in my watch list. I didn't know this was the general case, I just thought that you had checked the "minor change" on purpose, thinking moving a page is not a big deal or something. Anyway, I apologise again. I've fixed linking the pages to what they should link, and it all looks pretty now, so I'll just keep translating (tomorrow though, because today I skimmed through all the composers' page for any misprints on titles - such as "Op. 7" instead of "Op.7", not having virgules between the title of the piece and the catalogue/opus number, renaming "morceaux" to "pieces" and the german/french/english numbers to numerical figures and minor stuff like that, which appear major to perfectionists like me :P). Take care! ~ jujimufu 16:41, 7 July 2007 (EDT)
No need to apologize, I'm myself surprised that page moves don't show up in the watchlist.
On a related note, maybe I should teach my bot to do some of those corrections that you were doing manually, so you don't need to spend so much time on it; but I won't get around doing this before August or maybe September.
--Leonard Vertighel 16:57, 7 July 2007 (EDT)
That would be neat, yeah. I generally don't have a problem doing it, but thing is, I can't open too many pages at once, or I get banned for an hour, and this really slows down my work. However, I've corrected everything for now, so it's going to take a while before many miswritten titles exist in the database, so there's no need to hurry :) C ya! ~ jujimufu 10:34, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

traduzione

Little request

User:Hdl has been submitting his own works under a CC license, and than manually change to the "Personal" license, which is of course not a good idea. I've already left two messages on his talk page, but he continues to do this. Can you leave a German message on his talk page? He seems German. If even this fails we will have to delete his submissions. Thanks! :) --Feldmahler 14:51, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

Actually I believe he is Dutch. I'll ask Peter about it. --Leonard Vertighel 15:05, 10 July 2007 (EDT)
Done! Sorry for the delay, I was away until yesterday. I asked Mr. De Lange that he changes his licences and also removes the copyright messages in his files (which is a contradiction with his free distribution). Cheers to you all, Peter talk 08:04, 14 July 2007 (EDT)
I don't think that the copyright messages are a contradiction with free distribution. The free licenses basically just grant an irrevocable permission to use the works under certain conditions (attribution, etc.), but the author retains the copyright. However it would probably be a good idea to add the license to the scores (in addition to the copyright message, if he wants), but I don't know if that's required. --Leonard Vertighel 08:36, 14 July 2007 (EDT)
I'd agree that the first half of the copyright message is fine (the works are copyrighted after all, even if they are licensed under a CC license). The second part ("All rights reserved") seems out of place with the CC license though.
In any case, all this is assuming that he actually reads his talk page, which does not seem to be the case. If he doesn't respond soon we will have to remove all his compositions. --Feldmahler 14:10, 14 July 2007 (EDT)
I hadn't noticed the second part, "all rights reserved" is certainly wrong. Anyway, he hasn't even set up an email address, so his talk page seems indeed the only possibility to contact him (unless you want to block him and ask him in the blocking message to contact you via email). --Leonard Vertighel 14:22, 14 July 2007 (EDT)

Links to CPDL

Hello Leonard. WRT your note on my talk page: I think I understand what you mean but unfotunately I don't have admin privilages on CPDL (yet!) so I can't create an interwiki preface on my own but I will definitely suggest it to the admins. Regards --Bobnotts 13:58, 12 July 2007 (EDT)

Little translation request

Hi Leonard! Can you help me translate the short message I put on User_talk:Alkan81's talk page? Thanks! :) --Feldmahler 16:40, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Poulenc Doble Piano Concerto

Hi, I have a score reduction from the Poulenc 2 pianos concerto in Dm, but there is a note on the sheet: "Ouverage Protege, photocopie Interdite. Meme Partielle du 11 mars 1957. Constituerait CONTREFACON, Penal Art.4251". So the score is old and I think is free now, but I'm not sure if there is a broblem with. The score is now uploaded as an image: Poulenc._Doble_Piano_Concerto.pdf Thanks. --JnK 11:13, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

I have posted your question in the copyright section of the forum, someone more expert than me will reply shortly. --Leonard Vertighel 13:14, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

FW: Copyright eigene Kompositionen

Hi Leonard. I got a user message in German. I can understand German relatively good, but writing in German takes a lot of time for me. Could you perhaps take a look at this message? Thanks in advance! Peter talk 04:53, 7 August 2007 (EDT)

Other template for blue box used by composition lists

Hi Leonard, the blue box is often cut off on the right hand side by the composers' images. I don't want to change the length in the template since I don't know whether it is used elsewhere. Is it possible to run your bot without much work in order to automatically exchange the template for a new one? (same appearance, just a bit shorter, ~75% of the current length should be sufficient). It's not urgent, I just wanted to ask before doing something manually. Regards, Hobbypianist 15:06, 13 September 2007 (EDT)

A simpler way may be to just use the "|List Pages=" feature of the composer template which is specifically designed for this. Then I can just change the template settings (in the code) and shorten it :) Of course, it would still be nice to have the bot fix the pages that currently do not use the "|List Pages=" construct... and also the "|Picture=" construct. But then again I don't know how much free time Leonard has :) --Feldmahler 20:02, 13 September 2007 (EDT)
Currently approximately zero, but maybe in a week or so it will be slightly better. I'll try to look into this in the not too distant future. --Leonard Vertighel 04:03, 15 September 2007 (EDT)

Very very broken composer pages after upgrade

Hi Leonard! I just wanted to ask you if it is possible to run your bot over the composer pages again, and correct the picture thumbnail links. Basically, any composer with picture thumbnail links before the composer template will be very very broken after the upgrade to the new composer template.

This should be a relatively simple matter: basically search for the first two image tags (if two exists) before the template start marker ({{), and move the file name to |Picture= and |Signature= within the template respectively (you of course can omit Signature or both if there are less than two image tags).

Thanks! :) --Feldmahler 14:39, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

So what needs to be done is:
  • Move file name of first picture (if present) to |Picture=
  • Move file name of second picture (if present) to |Signature=
  • Move content of Bluefatbox (if present) to |List Pages=
Right? Does it matter in which order? Anything else? --Leonard Vertighel 14:59, 28 September 2007 (EDT)
Order doesn't really matter. Moving pictures are high priority because they break composer pages quite badly. List pages don't really "break" composer pages per se, but of course if you have the time to fix those that'd be quite appreciated too :) The three you listed are the only ones I think that can be automated. :) --Feldmahler 15:10, 28 September 2007 (EDT)
Took me a while to check the situation, because Special:Export was coughing up strange HTTP codes (seems no longer possible to export large numbers of pages). It seems there are 481 pages to modify. I'll start writing the bot now, but in a while I'll go to sleep, so there are 3 options:
  • Run the bot tomorrow
  • Run the bot overnight; in this case, you'll have to keep an eye on it and block the account in case it should go berserk
  • Run the bot very fast, like one edit every 5-10 seconds
You choose... --Leonard Vertighel 16:11, 28 September 2007 (EDT)
Third choice sounds fine (in conjunction with the first one, since IMSLP will be down for maintenance later on Saturday) :) Saturdays are relatively not busy... I'd set it at 8 seconds or so. The HTTP code is probably due to timeout or something (IMSLP server is getting more and more loaded as the traffic increases, so things start to become slower and sometimes timeout; an upgrade is in planning). --Feldmahler 16:21, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Bot run finished, but I'm afraid a few pages are now broken due to a programming mistake. Should be only a few, will try to find and fix them tomorrow. --Leonard Vertighel 20:30, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Found and fixed 3 screwed up pages, hope the rest is OK. --Leonard Vertighel 04:28, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
Didn't take into account the pages that use the legacy "Composer" template instead of the "#imslpcomposer" function (I think we should get rid of those at some point for consistency, might make maintenance a bit easier). Found and manually updated 11 pages. --Leonard Vertighel 04:59, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
Thank you! I actually realized it too... but the bot run finished just as I was about to ask you to add that. But I suppose everything is fine now :) --Feldmahler 08:31, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

Leader of Translation Project

Hi there Leonard! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind being the leader of the IMSLP internationalization effort, since you are an IMSLP translator yourself :) There isn't a whole lot to do; just sometimes checking if other translators are having technical issues (and I will tell them to ask you about translation issues), and notifying me if there are any issues (or improvements to be made) in the area of IMSLP internationalization.

One of the major points of the upgrade is that internationalization of almost everything (special pages and templates) are handled on the wiki instead of in the code. The only thing left out is error messages, which I'll be making translatable at a later time. I haven't written the manual on how to translate yet, but just wanted to ask first whether you'd be willing to do this :) --Feldmahler 16:48, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Not a good choice, since the Italian translation was never completed and is always lagging behind. But if that's OK with you... ;) However, sometimes my presence will be rather intermittent (like this year in July-September). If that's OK as well... --Leonard Vertighel 16:57, 30 September 2007 (EDT)
Haha... now that your the leader of the translation project I expect better results for the Italian translation ;) (Just kidding.) In any case, I expect just some basic wiki editing questions which you shouldn't have problem answering in 10 minutes or less :) Of course I will be available in case you cannot answer some question.
Anyway, I will be creating the translation project page in a few days. There is also a backlog of translations (more like all the translations) that need to be ported to the wiki. But never fear! They are not that many :) --Feldmahler 22:11, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Ciao!

--Diapason 09:55, 3 October 2007 (EDT)
