Dear Carolus 23:22, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

We're sorry to have deleted your upload, it's still eligible for upload but it was not submitted properly using the correct tool(s).

Your upload was deleted for one of the reasons listed below.

1. Using the "upload picture" link in the left sidebar or drop down menu above to upload scores.
Please do not use this link to upload scores! If you upload scores like this, no one will be able to use your submission!
2. Uploading a New Composition as a public domain ("Manuscript Scan" or "Normal Scan") or the image type as a Typeset.
To upload any new composition (whether its a Scan or a Typeset made from a software notation program that YOU composed or you are uploading it for a composer), you must first read and understand the information found on the Composer Portal and use "New Composition" for uploading your files. New pieces are not public domain anywhere, and composers need to understand that Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable. Picking the wrong license can have unfortunate consequences years from now so you need to seriously consider what you want for your pieces before uploading them here. They will never be taken down once they are up, unless someone has uploaded them in your name without your permission. Uploading a new composition with the "New Edition" or "New Arrangement" uploading tools also creates problems, the chief one being that attempting this severely limits your options for selecting a license. Typesets are reserved for derivative works like arrangements and editions. It also creates a problem in making our own system's counting of new works inaccurate.
3. Uploading a new arrangement or a new edition as a "Manuscript Scan" or "Normal Scan" and as public domain.
As with new compositions, new arrangements are subject to a full copyright term in most countries, so all the new tools mentioned in the Composer Portal are important for arrangers also. As for editions, even if you have simply put a well-known public domain work into a notation program, it still cannot be considered as public domain in many countries because of the 'moral rights' provisions of their copyright statutes. Items of this nature must be added as "Typesets" with a Creative Commons license selected from the pull-down menu. Public domain (dedicated) is also acceptable but be very careful when choosing this license as all of your creative rights to the file will be relinquished once uploaded and approved for download. Please also refer to reasons Nos.10-11 below regarding if you have not created a category page for your account to upload or the files your uploading under (say a different name than you) as a category page for typesets is required upon upload, no matter what the typeset is!!
4. Uploading a new typeset or edition with no attribution.
Because of the issues noted above, new editions are actually subject to copyright of varying degrees. Anything new enough to have been created using notation software is too new to fall under the 25-year "urtext" exemption for editions, which is observed voluntarily here. You cannot simply dump things you find on other websites. A new typeset has to be either your own creation or you must provide evidence that the item has been released under a Creative Commons or similar free license by its creator when you upload. Dumping is not acceptable.
5. Uploading a piece, arrangement or non-urtext edition published after 1928 where one of the contributors may have died less than 50 years ago.
Canada's life-plus-50 years copyright term refers to the lifetime of the last surviving contributor. Even if the composer is obviously public domain, it does not mean the arranger or editor of the item is. Likewise, there are several cases where the author of the text used by a composer dead a very long time died less than 50 years ago. The famous operatic composer Puccini (died 1924) is free in Canada, but one of his librettists who lived until 1974 is not. The important thing to remember is to do your research before you add something. It avoids a vast number of problems in the long run.
6. Uploading a piece that is only public domain in the United States.
The USA has the most complicated and confusing copyright law on earth. Pieces by composers like Claude Debussy (died 1918) which is public domain everywhere, while there are others by composers who died after 1973 which remain under copyright to this day. Our main server is located in Canada, which has a relatively simple copyright law based on the life of author (which means the last surviving contributor if more than one author is involved) plus 50 years. For example all of Claude Debussy's works are free everywhere, while no works of a composer who died after 1973 is in the public domain in Canada. In order to upload a file to the USA server, you need to be on the Classic Skin for the website (click on the "Switch back to classic skin" link at the bottom of any page if you are on the Modern skin currently), then go to "Add File" (upper right hand corner under search bar), then click on the tab you wish to upload the file under. On the Add Files page find this: "If a file is public domain only in the United States (e.g. was published before 1929 but author died less than 50 years ago), [more...]". Click on "more..." to reveal a link to click on "this upload form", click on this. This takes you to the PML-US Server page, from there upload a file here under "File upload". After upload, this redirects you back to "Add Files" page previously, and fill out the rest of the info on the page as normal.
7. Uploading a piece with little to no publication information of any kind that the file in question actually has printed (Publisher info is a required field)
Sometimes such information is nearly impossible to find, but not in the case of the deleted item. The information needed for this required field is really pretty basic: City: Publisher Name, date (if available). Plate number (if applicable). See this page for more information. If the upload was deleted, it's because this required field was filled with gibberish, a dash, or other text which avoided properly completing this required field. If only the publisher is entered, the file will be deleted and you must re-submit with the required information as described in this reason. If there is an editor or arranger as part of the item in question (if entered in the Editor or Arranger fields), please search by last name as a drop down menu will appear in either field to select the person if it is in the database, otherwise please create a category page for the contributor so other users can search for the same person.
8. Uploading files to the US server that should be available everywhere.
The USA has the most complicated and confusing copyright law on earth. As per No.6 above, we have a special server reserved for pieces which are free in the USA only. Despite our attempts to make the link for uploading to this obscure, some people upload to it and manage to miss the main upload tool which should be employed.
9. Creating superfluous pages for editions, arrangements and also dumping files.
Part of the instructions for adding works mentions the importance of adding things to the correct page before creating needless pages for works we already have. Pages are not to be created for separate movements or sections from other pieces. Items should be added to the page for the original work.
10. No Category/Composer page was ever created and associated too before uploading typesets under your account.
If you are new to uploading typesets for the first time and did not create your own category page under your actual name or under another name (or a collective name such as a organization, library, group, etc.) for which you have written permission (especially one who has died less than 50 years ago and you have gotten permission from or is still alive), you must create one when using "New Edition" or "New Arrangement". Please read over the Composer Portal on how to make a Category page if you do not know how to make one. It is assumed already under reason 2 above, that you already have a composer page made when using "New Composition" if you are uploading your own works. If you are an older uploader that has been around uploading before 2014 when the 1st big update to the upload tools were made and have not made a category page, you must still make one if you are uploading typesets now. Upon upload when choosing "New Edition" or "New Arrangement, the "Editor" or "Arranger" field, should be linked correctly onto the composer page under the correct tab, ex: "As Editor" or "As "Arranger".
11. Incorrect association or account not associated to correct composer page when uploading typesets.
When uploading, the Editor or Arranger fields should be linked to the category page in question your trying to upload under (it can be your category page or someone else your uploading the file for under), if it is unlinked as regular text please read further on (please avoid changing around these fields if possible as reason No.12 states below): Please check to make sure by going to your correct composer/catagory page (and/or a collective name such as a organization, library, group, etc.) that you have made already to make sure you have the correct living or deceased composer (who has died less than 50 years ago and you have gotten permission), under "Toolbox" (Modern Skin) --> "You are this person (associate)" or Gear symbol to the right of "Add Work" (Classic Skin) --> "You are this person (associate)". Make sure to also disassociate the incorrect composer page by doing the same method for each site skin but choosing this option instead: under "Toolbox" (Modern Skin) --> "You are not this person (disassociate)" or Gear symbol to the right of "Add Work" (Classic Skin) --> "You are not this person (disassociate)", otherwise your account could possible still choose the wrong composer name in the editor/arranger fields of the upload process. Upon upload when choosing "New Edition" or "New Arrangement, the "Editor" or "Arranger" field, should be linked correctly onto the composer page under the correct tab, ex: "As Editor" or "As "Arranger".
12. Changing auto-filled fields when uploading typesets.
When adding items using "New Composition", "New Edition" or "New Arrangement" tools, you have changed fields which should to be left unchanged such as the Scanner field (shown as "composer" or "editor" or "arranger"), the Editor or Arranger fields (where your name will appear). These fields should generally be left alone when uploading. Changing them to repeat your own name or something else is not allowed unless someone besides yourself engraved the work in a notation program or actually added performance indications. When uploading using "New Composition", no text should be added at all in the "Editor" field as the composer is normally considered the final editor without comment. When using the "New Composition", "New Edition" or "New Arrangement" tools, the Publisher field can be changed to the Chicago Citation format. Otherwise it should be your First and Last name in order as it appears in the "Editor" field or "Arranger" field.
13. Uploading typesets of other composer's works using "New Composition".
Please make sure you have read the Composer Portal for review on how to upload files of other composers that is not your own work. You must use "New Edition" or "New Arrangement" for uploading typesets of other composers.
14. Uploading any Engraving file onto a workpage without being in a .ZIP file or uploaded without any matched typeset PDF you created on the workpage already.
It's against IMSLP policy to upload just an engraving file (.mxl, .mscz, .mus, .sib, etc.) without a PDF with sheet music already on the workpage (or not uploaded alongside it) to download to any device that cannot download an engraving file that would be on the workpage only to view outside of a computer Operating system (Windows, Macintosh, Linux, etc.). Make sure to have created the PDF of the sheet music from the engraving file and upload that first before uploading an engraving file in a .ZIP compressed file.
15. Uploading parts for a multi-movement work as separate movements.
It's against IMSLP policy to upload just parts for a work with more than one movement as multiple sets of parts. This is one of the worst examples of complete ignorance of how things work in real life. Learn to use your notation software! No orchestra librarian or conductor would even consider performing a new work or arrangement with parts extracted in such a ridiculous and unprofessional manner. Instead of having to download one set of parts, they would have to instead download three or four sets and then put them together. If you are adding an edition or arrangement of a work with parts split into separate movements they will be deleted. Each part must contain all of the movements.
16. Uploading historical engraved scans or manuscripts scans as Public Domain (dedicated) or with a Creative Commons license.
If the item your adding was handwritten or engraved and is a historical edition, please use "Add Scan" (for Engraved Editions) or "Add Manuscript" for uploading as the Public domain (dedicated) license is a form of license reserved for typesets or editions of recently deceased or living composers who are under copyright everywhere given with permission. The scan your adding is just in the public domain, which means the file is no longer under copyright in a region or regions and free to use everywhere. However, when you dedicate an item to the public domain, that means the file is under copyright everywhere but the contributor decided to rescind all creative rights to the file in question and you will have no say in dictating to IMSLP on what you can do with the file (even if its your own composition) after its been submitted and approved for download, the file stay here forever until the day IMSLP no longer exists. Creative Commons files are similar as they are irrevocable once approved but you do have creative right to request deletion of files through a court order from your local judge in your country to have the files removed depending on the license chosen. All attempts to ask an administrator to delete the file(s) once its been submitted and approved will be denied or rejected, no exceptions.
Please read the quick guide to learn how to correctly submit scores, and also read Copyright Made Simple to make sure your file is legal to upload here. A longer explanation on this can be found in the manual. More details and other ways to use the site can be found at the Contributor Portal. We look forward to future submissions after you have read and understood the guidelines and perhaps completed the association process as described on the Composer Portal page, which allows access to the new upload tools designed for composers, arrangers and editors adding newly created original pieces, arrangements or editions. If you need help with the 'association' procedure described on the Composer Portal page, let us know and we will do it for you here.

Best Wishes,

IMSLP/Petrucci Music Library
