Wiener Urtext Edition was founded in 1972 as a joint venture of Schott and Universal Edition. The firm was run by Erwin Ratz until his death in 1973, after which the management was taken over by Karl Heinz Füssl and Hans-Christian Müller. After their deaths in 1992 and 1993 respectively, Rainer Mohrs and Reinhold Kubik took over, and Jochen Reutter has been the general editor since 1996. The company, located in Vienna, is still actively producing editions today.
The founding purpose of this edition was to follow in the footsteps of Heinrich Schenker and others like him (e.g., Bärenreiter) in producing engravings that reflected the composer's original intent as far as possible ("Urtext"). It has for that reason mainly focused on engraving standard-repertoire works such as those of Beethoven or Schubert that have long been prone to editorial errors.
