Hi there Leonard! I was wondering if I could ask you to design a HTML/PHP page, similar to the meta-page at Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org). I ask this because PGC will be using the imslp.ca domain, and so I will need something for imslp.org domain to point to the various sections of IMSLP.

Currently I have the following sections in mind:

Main sites
# IMSLP main site: imslp.ca
# IMSLP forums: imslpforums.org
# IMSLP blog: imslp.net (will be a blog on various aspects of IMSLP, including project and software development)
# IMSLP development site: imslp.info (this will be a small wiki for development purposes, mainly serving as a test bed for new ideas)

# Piano Society

I'll think about it. Having a news section on a portal page of that kind however doesn't seem a good idea to me. I think the portal page would be seen mainly by newcomers, while the news are probably more relevant for the regular users, who will usually head to the main site directly.

:Ahh... that is fine then :) I was just thinking of maybe major news regarding the IMSLP project itself (i.e. IMSLP site comes back up, etc), but that's not extremely necessary if you don't think they are suitable for the portal.

::Maybe I misunderstood your first message - I thought you wanted to display the main site's news section also on the portal. Displaying some "global" news might indeed make sense. We should just try to keep it down do a minimum. As a general rule, a first time visitor should be able to make sense of the page within a few seconds.

Is it certain that the domain will change? :The domain will change almost for sure. However, I will also be redirecting the /wiki/ subdirectory (and perhaps even index.php queries) on imslp.org to imslp.ca, so the impact is minimal. The changing of the interwiki links is fine, though not urgent; we can even just keep it as is and see what happens. :) As long as the interwiki link points to "http://imslp.org/wiki/$1" (the $1 being the article title of course) there shouldn't be any problems. --[[User:Feldmahler|Feldmahler]] 18:01, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

Hello Leonard. A couple of days ago you cleaned up and deleted a few files, including Tchaikovsky's Op.19 and Op.40. It would be really helpful if you could delete them from the IMDBP database as well, otherwise it causes a conflict when trying to create new pages to upload files for those works (as I've just been doing with Op. 19!). Hi Feldmahler, I was wondering how page deletions are supposed to work in the current system. On the one hand, when deleting e.g. an empty work page, it might make sense to keep the corresponding imdbp entry, unless there is reason to assume that the information is wrong; but on the other hand, this apparently generates a conflict when someone wants to recreate the page on imslp. Hello Feldmahler. Just a thought, but would it be possible to include a section for "Key" in the new IMDBP templates for each composition? Sometimes that's the simplest way to distinguish between pieces with similar titles by the same composer (e.g. Tchaikovsky's three "Valse-Scherzos" !). == Alphabetization ==

Hi Edward -- so glad the site's back! I've been uploading some Massenet songs and had a question about alphabetization. I understand that placement is chosen automatically when articles are present, but with differences in languages some issues have come up. "Il pleuvait," for instance, in French means "It rained" -- the "Il" is not an article as it would be in Italian, but rather a pronoun and so the song would correctly be alphabetized under I. == Can't Download most files ==

Hi, when I've tried to download most scores, most just stop after loading the first page or sooner. Then, I tried to save the link as a file in my computer, and when the download finishes, a message comes up saying: "This file is damaged and could not be repaired". When I used IMSLP before it was shut down, I could download every file with no trouble. I currently have dial-up internet, do I need DSL or Cable before I can download these files? The files that I am having trouble with are orchestral scores, parts of orchestral scores, and most solo and duet piano scores. What should I do?

:I've heard stories about troubles with Firefox with a download manager; I do not know what the cause is. It, however, does seem that most people are able to download fine (or else I would surely know). Have you tried disabling the download manager? Technically speaking it is probably better to use a download manager with a dialup connection, but if that is causing troubles we can try downloading without. I haven't tried to disable the download manager yet, do you know how to do that? No, I can't resume after the file after it's "done", my only options are "open", and "remove". :Technically this is trivial, but it may make things more complicated in the long run. Many composers indeed span time periods, but the time period designation on IMSLP is meant to be approximate and not accurate, and I would like to keep it simple at one time period for now (generally there will be one time period that musicologists agree on; if you don't know which, you can ask on the forums). Hi Feldmahler -- Question: I'm in the process of uploading all eight volumes of songs by Massenet (160 in total) and was wondering if maybe it might be a good idea to put the files together and categorize them as collections (ie. Mélodies, Volume I) on the main composer page. As it is now I have uploaded about a third of them and there are 77 files on the page, most of which are individual song titles -- This seems a bit messy to me, especially since it is unlikely someone would be looking for an individual song title as very few are well-known (and many have the same name, like Berceuse or Serenade). :This is perhaps the hardest question to answer of any question asked about IMSLP :) For example, the same question applies to Schubert. The Kalmus editions I'm working from are reprints of the original collections published by Hartmann and Heugel during Massenet's lifetime. Hi Feldmahler and Mssenetique, Here's one possibility: If the published volumes contain no more than 12-15 songs each, it might me most convenient to have a single workpage for each volume. You could also have separate workpages for the actual song cycles. For Massenet and other French composers, the original publishers frequently issued the songs in volume form - typiclly with a title like ''Melodies, Livre 1'' or something similar - during the composer's lifetime or slightly thereafter. This is certainly true of Heugel, and (in Faure's case at least) Hamelle. This get a lot more problematic in cases like Schubert, where most the songs issued in his lifetime were singles. The trick, I suppose is to determine how the volumes were issued in the composer's lifetime or slightly afterwards - instead of using whatever configuration Kalmus may have happened to throw them together into. In many cases, Kalmus would have followed Heugel's grouping for the volumes they issued. Keep in mind also that Hartmann was absorbed by Heugel starting in 1891, so the Heugel collected volumes from about 1920 or so most likely contain all of the titles first issued by Hartmann. PS: I just did a search on OCLC for ''Melodies'' of Massenet issued by Heugel. By 1914, 2 years after his death, Heugel had at least 8 volumes available, in versions for high and low voice. I've already translated the News section and fixed some stuff on the Main page and a few other pages, but I also think it would be very important to translate the "Urgent Request" text that appears on every page into Greek and the other languages (with "iflang", I presume) so that more people will have a chance of seeing it and helping you. If you want me to, I can send you the Greek translation so you can update it yourself, if it's a privilage issue.

And I would like to take this chance and ask a few questions to make sure I know how to continue. Firstly, our of the navigation/translation bars, which one is more desirable, the green one ([[IMSLP:Sitemap]]) or the gray one ([[Help:Page_creation]])? Moreover, how do I translate the templates of work pages? For example, on [[Piano_Sonata_No.44_%28Haydn%2C_Joseph%29|this page]] (randomly chosen), altough the navigation menu on the left is in Greek, and bottom information too, the "Music Files", "Recordings" and "General Information" are not, and neither are their respective fields. I remember this used to work, so the translation must be somewhere. If it isn't, just say the word and I'll have them translated again on the spot :)

Hi Peter, It appears that new user Caprotti has uploaded a number of replacement files for things we already have, inclding some previously submitted by Goldberg988 whose scans are usually of very high quality. :I can relate to your feelings!! How difficult can the guidelines be to understand? The deletions I did today were for two reasons: 1) a new edition, arrangement or typeset that was not created by the person who uploaded it (as far as I could tell), which is a potential copyright problem; 2) an exact duplicate (the identical file) of something already in the archive. Yes, I still use the yahoo e-mail account, so I'll reply there as well. OK, I read his e-mail and your reply. I have no problem with him wanting to replace the scans, though there is no protection for a library stamp or watermark attached to a scan of a public domain original in either Canada or the USA. The only (slight) issue I can think of is the fact that any of the files we've just certified as being public domain suddenly revert to unknown status when they are replaced. I light of the fact that we still have a fairly significant (ca.4500) number of files to go through and review, the prospect of Caprotti do all of this right now is less than ideal. Perhaps this should be organized as a community project. It would also be nice to credit Caprotti as the scanner, since (as you mentioned) we hardly ever know who has scanned what. Perhaps there is an exemption for libraries and archives under the German / EU statutes, but if that's so why then aren't all of the more modern items like Bartok, Schoenberg, etc. likewise present in their digital collection?

While the publication is dated (on the title page), it was published without a copyright notice and would be public domain in the USA unless Eichmann or their successor filed an NIE in the two-year window of 1996-98. :I'm not extensively accustomed to baroque literature, but after comparison with other Vivaldi scores available, it seems to me that this is indeed an interpretative edition. In the other scores, there are no dynamics present with only occasionally a slur or articulation - everything which is added by the editor is included in brackets on the score. One could argue that these additions could reflect the result of scientific research, but in common performer's sense the aforementioned musical components are the key elements of an interpretation. :I can relate to your feelings!! How difficult can the guidelines be to understand? The deletions I did today were for two reasons: 1) a new edition, arrangement or typeset that was not created by the person who uploaded it (as far as I could tell), which is a potential copyright problem; 2) an exact duplicate (the identical file) of something already in the archive. Yes, I still use the yahoo e-mail account, so I'll reply there as well. OK, I read his e-mail and your reply. I have no problem with him wanting to replace the scans, though there is no protection for a library stamp or watermark attached to a scan of a public domain original in either Canada or the USA. The only (slight) issue I can think of is the fact that any of the files we've just certified as being public domain suddenly revert to unknown status when they are replaced. I light of the fact that we still have a fairly significant (ca.4500) number of files to go through and review, the prospect of Caprotti do all of this right now is less than ideal. Perhaps this should be organized as a community project. It would also be nice to credit Caprotti as the scanner, since (as you mentioned) we hardly ever know who has scanned what. The deletions I did today were for two reasons: 1) a new edition, arrangement or typeset that was not created by the person who uploaded it (as far as I could tell), which is a potential copyright problem; 2) an exact duplicate (the identical file) of something already in the archive. Yes, I still use the yahoo e-mail account, so I'll reply there as well. OK, I read his e-mail and your reply. I have no problem with him wanting to replace the scans, though there is no protection for a library stamp or watermark attached to a scan of a public domain original in either Canada or the USA. The only (slight) issue I can think of is the fact that any of the files we've just certified as being public domain suddenly revert to unknown status when they are replaced. I light of the fact that we still have a fairly significant (ca.4500) number of files to go through and review, the prospect of Caprotti do all of this right now is less than ideal. Perhaps this should be organized as a community project. It would also be nice to credit Caprotti as the scanner, since (as you mentioned) we hardly ever know who has scanned what. If Germany and EU Copyright give a 70-year term after publication for works first published in the term of protection following a composer's death, this work should theoretically be under full copyright until 2013 - just as you have tagged it. Perhaps there is an exemption for libraries and archives under the German / EU statutes, but if that's so why then aren't all of the more modern items like Bartok, Schoenberg, etc. likewise present in their digital collection?

While the publication is dated (on the title page), it was published without a copyright notice and would be public domain in the USA unless Eichmann or their successor filed an NIE in the two-year window of 1996-98. Hi Peter, What's your take on this? There is a continuo realization as part of the full score, so that is most likely off-limits. The real question concerns the string parts. They appear to be fairly heavily edited to my eye. Is it urtext or interpretative? Do the slurs and articualtions added by Malipiero constitute sufficiently original additions to qualify as a full derivative work copyright? How original is the continuo realization, really? :I'm not extensively accustomed to baroque literature, but after comparison with other Vivaldi scores available, it seems to me that this is indeed an interpretative edition. In the other scores, there are no dynamics present with only occasionally a slur or articulation - everything which is added by the editor is included in brackets on the score. One could argue that these additions could reflect the result of scientific research, but in common performer's sense the aforementioned musical components are the key elements of an interpretation. Hi Peter, I thought I should bring you in on the discussion of what IMSLP's official page hierarchy should be. Lyle Neff has raised the issue over at the forum. While I disagree with his proposed hierarchy, he has a point in that there is a need for one now that we are seeing so many orchestral parts being uploaded. I'll be giving Feldmahler a call on this as well so we can all hopefully come up with some ideas of what it should be and why it should be in a given order. Thank you for tidying up the composer name - I was wondering how best to do that - but it might cause a bit of confusion. The lady in question was usually known as Madame Poldowski (or usually just Poldowski). She was the daughter of Henryk Wieniawski but preferred to go by the pseudonym.

There are a couple of nice pictures of her at the following link that we could use for her composer page (but I'm far too blonde to know how to upload them).

== Some thoughts ==

There are some issues with internationalization that I think need to be addressed in the medium term.
* The news are not up to date in most languages, and I think that timely translations to all languages are not to be expected. Thus, I think it would be useful to have new news items appear in English in all language versions, until they are translated. Is it possible to automate this? A similar reasoning applies to important changes to help/policy/etc. pages.
* As the community grows, a system like [[wikipedia:Wikipedia:Babel|Wikipedia:Babel]] could be useful. For our purposes, a simplified version with one or at most two levels should be perfectly sufficient.

Just a reminder for a point to consider in the future. Most , if not all translations, were outdated. This is particularly important for: submission guidelines, copyright pages, and copyright templates. I think the translations were also a reason for bad submissions (see forum).

* find devoted translators that check every edit

* abandon all translations

Abandoning translations might not be a good idea. I suppose that people who don't understand English well enough would start using automated translators, and that might be even worse. I think the best solution would be if we could come up with a system that allows us to easily mark all translations of a given page as outdated (''without'' having to edit each translation manually!). However this should ''not'' happen automatically each time the English page is edited, because otherwise each spelling correction etc. would mark the translations as outdated, which doesn't make sense.

I'm aware that this might not be easy to implement, but one idea would be to create the ability to assign "version numbers" to the important pages and their translations. Whenever a "critical" change is made, the version number is increased (manually). When someone translates such a page, he assigns the same version number to the translation as that of the original page. When the two versions numbers no longer match (because the version of the original has increased), a big fat "outdated translation" warning message should appear at the top of the translated page, until someone updates the translation (and thus its version number). The "outdated translation" message should be the first thing that gets translated. ** Q: Que idioma deverá ser usado para nomear uma obra?
*** A: Depende do título:
**** Se tratando de um título "comun" (Sonata, Sinfonia, etc.), O idioma ideal é o Inglês, porque muito títulos já estão em Inglês. Contudo, se você quiser, por alguma razão, usar outro idioma, é aceitável.
**** Não se tratando de um título "comun" , o ideal é usar o título no idioma original. Contudo, deverá ser traduzido para um alfabeto similar a maioria dos alfabetos europeus, porque a maioria das pessoas pode, pelo menos, conhecer o alfabeto. Isto aplica-se a, por exemplo, o alfabeto Cirílico (que deve ser traduzido), porque muitas pessoas não conseguem ler este alfabeto a menos que conheçam e usem esse alfabeto. * FAQs
** Q: Which language to use for a work piece title?
*** A: Depends on the title:
**** If it is a "common" title (Sonata, Symphony, etc.), the prefered language is English, because most of these titles are already in English. However, if you want to use another language for some reason, that is acceptable.
**** If it is not a "common" title, the prefered language is the language of the original title. However, it should be transliterated to an alphabet that is similar to most European alphabets, just so that most people can at least know the alphabet. This applies to, for example, the Cyrillic alphabet (it has to be transliterated), because most people cannot read the Cyrillic alphabet unless they know a language which uses that alphabet. This is a purely practical solution, and is not at all meant to be offensive.
**** Note: This problem should disappear entirely when I implement the page title translation feature in a few months.

** Having more than 15/20 submissions per page

*** Correction Rationale: The page becomes overcrowded and finding files becomes difficult.
*** Correction Guidelines: Generally, a page should have a maximum of 15 submissions, with a hard limit of around 20. More than that, and the page should be split. For piece sets, the number of pieces per page should be between 6 and 12 depending on the size of the pieces, to leave room for alternate editions. If the pieces are small enough (say, less than 500kb per piece on average), they may be submitted with each file having more than one piece in it to prevent overcrowding. The optimum file size on IMSLP is between 2MB and 6MB, though obviously there are many cases where having this size is impossible.
