Neue Bach-Ausgabe, Serie VI. Kammermusik, Band 2. Kammermusik 2: Sechs Suiten für Violoncello solo (pp.1-52) Kassel: Bärenreiter Verlag, 1988. Plate BA 5068.URTEXT EDITION
This is an urtext/critical/scholarly/scientific edition (or a simple re-engraving). Any commentary or critical apparatus, if protected by copyright, should not be included in the scan(s) available here. This edition was published by Bärenreiter in Germany over 25 years ago and is in the public domain in its country of origin.
In Canada, new editions/re-engravings of public domain works (when not including new original material) should be in the public domain due to failing to meet the threshold of originality. In most European Union countries, these editions (except new original material) are generally protected for no more than 25 years from publication (30 years in Poland). In the United States, copyright can only apply to new creative work, and the re-engraving of a public domain piece (not including new additions of creative material) should not qualify for a new copyright, despite copyright claims (which properly would only apply to new material).
You may need to check the publication date and details of the work's first publication in order to determine the work's copyright status, especially for the United States.

The title page reference to Robert Schumann is due to the fact that Schumann's arrangement used Dotzauer's edition as its source. Stade's revised arrangement incorporated features from the Dotzauer and Grützmacher editions, while the original version is mainly based on Norblin's edition from ca.1824.

| Misc. Notes
|
The solo cello suites arranged for violin, as preparatory studies for Bach's solo violin works. Some passages, especially arpeggiated sections, are rewritten, and suites 1-5 are transposed up a fifth. [Note that annotations referring to Bach's original notes give the cello version]. This arrangement appeared at almost the same time as Grützmacher's version for concert performance. Many of the alterations to notes (such as the opening bars of the prelude to the first suite) are common to David and Grützmacher. David's source is almost certainly the edition published by Heinrich Probst in 1825, itself a re-engraving of the first published edition, that by Janet et Cotelle (Paris, 1824), but David must also have access to another source, as he does not repeat the egregious errors of the Probst or Cotelle texts.

It seems to be a reissue of Hofmeister Edition. Spindler was a Viola player in Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. -- when was the Hofmeister edition published? Worldcat turns up nothing more recent than 1953- did Spindler leave his arrangement in manuscript?

General Information
Navigation etc.
Wikipedia gives a date of probably before 1720 (so probably? 1710s), mentioning unnamed scholars (will have to look that up and fill in?) who believe that the suites were written before the solo violin sonatas and partitas which have 1720 on their manuscript?.
